Why would these kids care? They cant hurt you physically soo...who cares

I mean, if I was a trouble maker or w/e why the hell would I care about these inmates yelling at me. Ok so they yell. Nobody can lay a finger on you. End of story. Id smirk my whole way through

So are you saying that the only way the inmates can have an effect on those kids/teens is by being able to have physical contact with them? By the looks of it their "no touch policy" still seems to be effective to all to some degree. There's been a number of kids who have had the same attitude about not being scared, thinking it was a joke, etc, and usually without fault they all break down by the end of the tour.

Ill ask this of anybody with the attitudes of "they cant touch me, they cant hurt me". Have you ever been inside a real prison? I dont mean as an inmate necessarily (though that certainly applies)but as anybody- a visitor, employee, etc. Through my job I was offered a tour of a local prison.

First of all, throw out any conscious thoughts. These places, at least for me, stir feelings in you you cannot control. They are very depressing places. Its kind of hard to explain. You actually feel the prison itself. The inmates are mostly animals and its very very lonely. Fear is the overwhelming emotion. Fear and anger Id say.

Im in my mid 30s and if my reaction was any indicator I can only imagine what the scared straight kids think at age 14-17. Its definitley a wake up.

You're obviously missing the point of the Scared Straight programs. The point is to show these JDs what life will be like for them should they end up being an inmate in a jail or prison, when they actually will be faced with the real possibility of being beaten. Or raped. Or murdered.

I have actually thought about this myself. I don't condone hitting as a way of getting a point across, but these programs IMO aren't all that effective because those kids know going in they will not be touched. If I ran a program like that I would single out the biggest troublemaker and have one of the inmates grab him by the shirt or something. The kid would NOT be hit. I would instruct the officers or any other people there not to act. Why I think my idea would work is because as I said, they come in there thinking nobody is going to touch them. Now someone does and the officers don't do anything. Now he or she might wonder what would happen if they were in there for real. I think they'd take it more seriously then.

They've done that. The episode where a couple of inmates grab the cocky kid at the end of the line and shove him into a shower stall, to show him how easy it was to do and no one would know or care what happened to him.

Yes, we need to stop feeding the trolls.

Seeing the inside of a prison can have an impact, I would think.

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

reply

They are trying to show the kids the reality of 'life' inside a prison...you know 99% of those kids would get 'bent over like a shotgun' in a minute once those doors closed behind them.

I think they need to leave some of them there overnight for more impact.

I was ordered by the judge to go to a scared straight program at 13 years old in my hometown of Houston. I can tell you from my experience I was thinking the same thing, "they can't touch me, guards are gonna be there anyway" Then I saw some scary ass looking inmates who were in for murder, one who looked like and built like Tiny Lister(Deebo from Friday) with an eye patch and was in for capitol murder. He scared the piss out of me and it makes you realize that he was in there for life, if he wanted to break my face he could have. But it wasn't just about the intimidation and more so the one on one you had at the end....they drop the scare tactics and talk to you about how they were once in your situation and kept screwing up so if you want to keep screwing up then its only a matter of time before you end up there. Add to that you get a first hand taste of how small those cells are, food is nasty, having to be on edge the whole time, its ridiculously effective. Worked for me...
