The actor playing Kay (Arthur's brother) should have played Arthur
Seems to have a lot more presence and charisma.

That's funny. My old lady and I both thought that exact same thing after watching the first episode.
She couldn't believe that any no would cheat on his brother with him.
I don't know about that though, I just know the guy playing his brother was better suited for the part.
If anything, Bower should have played Mordred.
After tonight's episode did anyone feel a twinge of disappointment after the noble came up to Kay and said "Your highness just a moment of your time", only to have it quickly followed by "Wrong brother, its him you want."? Even the characters inside the show (except Merlin) know who looks to be better as king.
shareWe can only hope that the series will turn, like most Arthurian tales, to actually focus on the knights. Honestly, see Chretien de Troyes or Malory. Arthur's king, he wins the kingdom, and then he does basically nothing except preside over court until the Guinevere-Lancelot affair comes out and he is forced to act (Malory even suggests Arthur knew about it and did nothing because it was easier/better for the kingdom). Otherwise, "Arthurian legend" is all about Lancelot's accomplishments, Gawain's, Perceval's, et al. With the excellent casting of Leontes, Kay, and even possibly Gawain, we can hope the writers take advantage of them (and Merlin, Morgan) and leave whiny Arthur to putter around the fixer-upper castle. I'm sure it's not to be, but it would be a pleasing thought!

Wow I'm really stunned how many people have agreed with my OP.
I was actually thinking the same thing that I could forgive a contrived "twist" that it turns out Kay and arthur were switched for the "real" arthurs protection.
And the person who pointed out that Bowers would of been an ideal Mordred was also spot on.
I do think this weeks episode was overall an improvement, despite the lack of Eva nudity, and having the lame Arthur/Guinivere stuff.
Alright. I like leontis a lot. Had it been kay versus leontis for geunviere (sp?) I would have a hard time picking sides I'd imagine. as it stands I'm all for leontis because arthur is who he is. Now some people probably know how it works out (like arthur and gwen getting together, I'd imagine it happens.) but I don't want to know. anyway team leontis.

Just started watching it and that was the first thing that came to my mind.
shareDefinately, seems like they deliberately choose the goofiest looking kid they could find to play Arthur. Totally destroyed the show for me. Otherwise it could have been great.
shareExactly what I was thinking the whole show. Not only did Kay have more presence, but he also was perfectly convincing as the inexperienced Knight adapting to the world around him. He would have made the perfect inexperienced King, inspiring confidence that he was in fact worth following.
The show tried to rewrite the Camelot legend and in turn tried to rewrite Arthur, and screwed themselves in the process. Arthur is the main draw of the Arthurian legends, they screwed with the glue that held it all together. Kay would have made a great Arthur as he actually resembles Arthur from the legends.
Better writing also would have helped.
Yes I completely agree with what brendanfoy is saying.
I didnt really enjoy this series and it was mainly due to the rewriting of a legend that is very well known throughout the world. And I personally feel they didnt do a very good job, i could have given it more of a go if the story was better even if it wasn't the same story I had grown up with.
From the very first episode I felt Kay should have been cast as Arthur, he does have a bigger presence and is more of how I think the legend portrays Arthur.so that was a big mistake on the casting crew.
Even Bradley James from "The adventures of Merlin" or just "Merlin" up here in Canada would have done a better job.

I totally agree .. that was a freaking casting disaster ..
Michael Chiklis is my Chuck Norris.
Just now caught this show, so a little late to the party. I still cannot get over the casting of Arthur. And I totally agree that the guy who played Kay would have been a FAR better choice. My main reason is that he actually looks like someone who could stand up to Morgan. Arthur simply doesn't. He does not look like a guy I would trust to watch over my cat for the weekend, much less rule a kingdom. You know those dudes you see walking down the street and you just KNOW they have weed in their sock? That is what this Arthur reminded me of. He even had that stooped posture those guys have; not exactly a "kingly" way to stand. I thought that the slouch was going to only last the first few episodes, but it stayed until the finale. They needed an actor who could convincingly go from being a naive boy to a confident man. I just never really saw that with this Arthur. Kay, however, for all his limited screen time, did manage to pull that off.
I'd thought the same. He was really a better actor. The guy playing Arthur was miscast, and his relationship with Guinevere had no chemistry on screen (that was the actress' blame too).
shareI think the makers messed up when they tried casting Arthur as the "boy" king while also expecting us to believe that he had a meaningful, mature relationship with Guinevere. It just didn't work. This should be shown in film schools everywhere as a classic example of miscasting. Although Arthur was supposed to be very young when he first became king, what was MORE important to the story was his relationship with Guinevere and not his actual age.
shareTotally agree!!! I thought I was the only one who thought that.
