Why didnt the Bear kill Leo?

I assume it wasnt hungry, but simply wanted to protect her cubs. But why didnt she finish the job?

A grizzly bear will attack until it thinks the threat is averted.

The most common piece of advice when attacked by a grizzly is to play dead. Many people have survived grizzly attacks by playing dead. Very few have survived by fighting back or running away.

Grizzly bears don't have opposable thumbs or cognitive thought, so this particular bear wouldn't be able to take Leo's pulse to make sure he is positively dead.

Conversely, if attacked by a black bear you are better off fighting it.

reply

Because it didn't kill Hugh Glass in real life.

Bears rarely eat humans unless starving. Bears attack if they think you're a danger to their cubs, and Grizzlies often attack for territorial reasons.

reply

The simple answer: Glass killed it, as a result of his initially gunshot, and then several knife stabs when the bear returned to Glass.

reply

Because he wasn't going to allow her to kill him. He had to. He shot at her at first and then stabbed her several times.

reply

Because Leo acted dead. I hear that's what you're supposed to do if attacked by a bear.

reply

Leo survived so I could be tortured for 2.5 hours in the worst movie I have seen in years. hell ... decades.

The only books worth reading are those written in the deep, passionate waters of life.
