Movies that make you feel empty inside

After watching this movie (which I really enjoyed), I just sat there looking at nothing for ten minutes. Now, half an hour later, I've still got a lump in my throat. This movie really got to me.

I'm a guy in the 20's and I like.. you know.. Guy movies. I love Django Unchained (and everything other Tarantino), Sin City and stuff like that.

However, I also really like movies like this. I don't cry during or after movies though, but sometimes, like now, I watch a movie that just makes me want to (hence the before mentioned lump).

I think it has something to do with me really enjoying the movie while it lasts, and then, when it's done, I'm a little sad that (in this case) Charlie is just Logan Lerman and Sam is just Emma Watson once again.
I don't know them anymore. I get back to reality. And it makes me feel kind of empty inside.

This of course means that the characters in the movie have grown on me, and I bet I'm not the only one who feels like this once in a while. So therefore I'm asking you guys to share with me some of the movies that have made you feel this way.
Amélie springs to my mind as another example.

This is such a beautiful movie. You felt for all the main characters, everything about the movie was great...perfect, its the best of its kind. I watched it when it came out on dvd last year, i told my buddy to watch it(cause he likes chick flicks and dramas, lol), but he never got around to it. I finally got him to watch it last night. He loved everything about it.. he couldn't stop talking about it. He said, and I quote, "I wanna watch it all over again as if It was the first time". Haha, we sat and talked about it for an hour after, talking about life and what not. But yeah, its deff a movie that'll make you think about alot of things.

I agree that this was such an unbelievably good movie. Those who read the book would probably agree with me that the movie was, in some ways, very different from the book. But most would probably also agree that despite these differences it was still an extremely well done, satisfying movie. Stephen Chbosky succeeded, as he did in the book, to project the familiar themes of adolescent struggle while simultaneously introducing his own twist and flair for fantastic story telling. But I wouldn't say that this movie made me feel empty. I still get what you're trying to say though. I felt so happy with this ending. It was complete, the characters were at peace, all was just right. But I did miss the characters like you did. How could Logan Lerman not actually be Charlie? It was hard to believe. That's how I knew how amazing this movie really was. It was completely believable.

Some ideas for you:

Skins (U.K.) : Although this series is most often, but only somewhat accurately, represented as being crude and excessively inappropriate that is a really simplistic view to have. A few episodes in you will find yourself attached to the characters, to their emotions, to their every action. It is at once hilarious and then inspiring. And always, it is unique and introspective. The whole cast is magnificent, especially Kaya Scodelario as Effy Stonem.

Garden State: Someone else commented that they love anything with Natalie Portman and I definitely agree with that. She is once again excellent here. But more so, Zach Braff is the heart of this story and he anchors it beautifully.

500 Days of Summer: I always have mixed emotions about this movie and I think that is what is so great about it. If you haven't seen this movie already just know that, as they tell you in the beginning, it is not a love story. You will spend most of this movie in misery, just as Joseph Gordon-Levitt does. You will fall in love as he does and feel all of his happiness' at your core. And then you will feel his heartbreak and every depth of his lowest lows. This movie is so powerful because you feel as the characters do. You love, you hate, and you forgive. This is life in a movie for me and because of that it will always remain one of my favorites.

Cruel Intentions: I love this movie so much. That said, it is also not for everyone. I always say never judge a book by its cover and that is equally true with this movie. Although some of her recent movies haven't been real great, Reese Witherspoon is a wonderful actress when she wants to be. Proof of this are her performances in The Man in the Moon, Election, Walk the Line, and Water for Elephants. But she is as good here as she was in many of those. We meet Annette Hargrove (Reese's Character) in Cruel Intentions and we think we know immediately where the story is to go. But so much happens between that first introduction and the movie's conclusion. It is an excellent movie, fitted with a similarly brilliant soundtrack.

So as to save myself from having to write out long, detailed descriptions any longer I will simply include these last few favorites:

-Fight Club: I think of this as the Inception of the 90's. It will mess with your mind in very enjoyable ways.

-Beginners: Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer. All the greatness that can be spoken of this movie is attributed to their performances. And that is enough.

Bro,

I exactly feel what youve written. I got that feeling from watching this, but it was way more powerful when i watched DAZED AND CONFUSED by R. Linklater (I encourage you to watch it as well).

The feeling goes like: "I have some kind of nostalgia, but is not nostalgia cuz nothing to this really happened to me".

My HS years were *beep* I was fat, shy, virgin, hanging out with the nerds, not going out or anything. Close to graduation (one year before actually) changed my life for good: became popular, lose weight, started going out with girls, etc and now I have some good memories, though I lost some valuable years beeing alone in my room "writing poetry and listening to Asleep" (not Asleep actually, I liked more That Night Has Opened My Eyes).

A few years ago, after my life had changed for good I was on the back of a pick up truck that belonged to my friend, going from a concert of a good band in my town to a bonfire in the bitch, surrounded by cool lads and nice girls and the day after watched "Dazed and Confused" again and the nostalgia feeling was not there because I realized that I had-Im having fun my way: is not the 70s in Texas nor a school close to LA with Emma Watson as my classmate but Im having it good.

So what I can tell you is that if this makes you sad, you should look at Charlie's story and go out there and start a new life, is just like the doctor tells him: "we can't choose where we come from but we can choose where we go from there".

So keep it good and remember that were infinite!

Perks didn't make me feel empty. It reminded me that I'm not alone in my experiences especially towards the end when Charlie is in the hospital and things will improve.

As far as movies that made me feel empty, briefly, Megan is Missing did that. I think it was just the sheer implications that Amy died being buried alive beside the corpse of her best friend and would never be found, plus the recording of them in the credits talking about how great their future will be..
