Movies that make you feel empty inside

After watching this movie (which I really enjoyed), I just sat there looking at nothing for ten minutes. Now, half an hour later, I've still got a lump in my throat. This movie really got to me.

I'm a guy in the 20's and I like.. you know.. Guy movies. I love Django Unchained (and everything other Tarantino), Sin City and stuff like that.

However, I also really like movies like this. I don't cry during or after movies though, but sometimes, like now, I watch a movie that just makes me want to (hence the before mentioned lump).

I think it has something to do with me really enjoying the movie while it lasts, and then, when it's done, I'm a little sad that (in this case) Charlie is just Logan Lerman and Sam is just Emma Watson once again.
I don't know them anymore. I get back to reality. And it makes me feel kind of empty inside.

This of course means that the characters in the movie have grown on me, and I bet I'm not the only one who feels like this once in a while. So therefore I'm asking you guys to share with me some of the movies that have made you feel this way.
Amélie springs to my mind as another example.

and of course, American Beauty!

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I've been in sort of a romance/drama mode ever since watching this movie, though I haven't found something that left me with the same feeling as this one. Most of them were good movies though.

I've checked IMDb for some of the same keywords which led me to movies like Almost Famous, Stand By Me and Breakfast Club. Neither of those can be directly compared to Perks, though.

It annoys me that I can't come up with any other movies that made me feel like this before, cause I know I have. The only thing I can come up with is when I finished the last Harry Potter novel a few years back.

Anyways, next movies on my list are "3 Idiots", "Before Sunrise" and "Garden State". The last one has been mentioned many times on this board, so I'm a bit eager to check it out.
But please, keep the suggestions coming, folks!

Seriously, IMDb - WHEN will you separate the signatures from the posts? This is *beep* annoying.

reply

Oh, and I'm also looking forward to Silver Linings Playbook which isn't out until later this month here in Denmark.

Silver Linings Playbook is not like this movie

reply

Oh, okay... I'll probably watch it anyways.. :)

Funny, Almost Famous, Stand by Me and Breakfast club are all on my Top 100 films of all time (along with Perks). Also, Before sunrise and Before sunset are there also...Glad you are going to watch them. Before midnight comes out in this summer!

On top of my mind, as already mentioned, Before Sunrise, Before Sunrise (and good we still get more of the two characters there) and Igby Goes Down.

But also:
- In the Land of Women (very underrated I believe)
- Arizona Dream (talking of massive lump in the throat)
- My Blueberry Nights
- Love Me If You Dare
- A Home at the End of the World

Mystery Skin. It's a similar story with a much different theme. Once it's over, you'll just want to curl up and wish your mum was holding you as a child.

I agree with you completely and I love aAmeile but that doesnt make me feel empty at the end it only reafirms my love of life and all the beauty in it. Its my go to film when im depressed.

Other films a bit like perks I can think of are

Dazed and confused
Igby goes down

il post more later

Another heart wrenching movie this one reminds me of is "Last Change Harvey". It doesn't relate to stressful teen years, but is similarly sad.

Here is a list of a few of my favorite movies which is set in just about the same mood as "Perks":

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Dead Poets Society (One of my top 5 movies ever!)
Garden State ( as mentioned above...)
Into the Wild (not so much a love story, but indeed great anyway!)
The Good Heart
50/50
Its A Kind of a Funny Story

There are a lot more and if you like I can look some more in my "library"!

Enjoy!

Great list Toby. Love all those except Into the Wild & The Good Heart, which I have not seen.

Eternal Sunshine is so under-rated. (I'm still pissed Jim didn't get an Oscar nom for it. How did Kate when Jim carried the movie? That's just insane.)

I can definitely see the Garden State comparisons.

Another film that had me feeling similarly was the directors cut of The Butterfly Effect. Not the theatrical release, which was a very weak & "mainstreamed" story. Like the studio execs saw the directors cut & were like, "No, too dark... We need something happier." You can see how good the movie could have been. Luckily, I saw the directors cut 1st. It's powerful. It left me feeling sort like I did at the end of Perks, but actually a little sadder.

I just saw the movie too.. then I saw your post. I must say I'm getting quite the exact same feeling right now. Its a strange feeling.. happens to me quite often with films like that .. I wish I could 'hang out'with them a little longer to see how things progress.

Donnie Darko
American Beauty
Garden State
The Truman Show
The Squid And The Whale
(500) Days Of Summer
Skins (UK Tv-series)

- The Beach
- Keith
- The Butterfly Effect (I can't understand why people don't like this movie)
- The Notebook
- The Time Traveler's Wife

Those are all I can think of right now that leave me with mixed feelings at the end. Like I want to cry, but not really because it's sort of a happy ending.

Some movies that springs to my mind are,

Inside I'm Dancing [Rory O'Shea Was Here]
Never Let Me Go
Stand By Me
Mystic River
Keith

These movies get me all the time.

I'm 19 and I watched this with my girlfriend last night (I suggested watching it, not her). I too like action films but I also love Animations and I can sit through 'girly' films. Honestly, I feel the exact same as you. I lay in bed last night and I couldn't sleep at all because I had so many thoughts racing through my mind. I really did enjoy this film and it saddened me that it was over.

I think the part that really hit me bang in the sweet spot was when he phoned his sister. I know his sister from The Vampire Diaries which my girlfriend watches and she always come across as a bit snobby and whiney. They didn't seem that close in this film and only really shared brief encounters in scenes like where she gets slapped by ponytail derek and he tries to step in which she then quickly tells Charlie to go away. I never really felt the connection with them until the end when he phones her while she's by the pool and straight away she tells her friend to send the police to her house. I don't know why but it felt like somebody had kicked me in the gut.

I really did love this film, Charlie reminds me of myself a lot and I thought Patrick was brilliant. I'm a bit low on friends at the moment due to various reasons like moving away and working full time with people older than me and I really do wish I had a Sam and Patrick walking into my life.

One thing I didn't quite grasp was the age difference of them though. I assume that Sam and Patrick had to be at least 3 or 4 years older than Charlie if they were seniors but it never really seemed portrayed that way? Charlie looked very similarly aged to them and they all acted like they were the same age.

reply

You'll have to watch the deleted scenes because it really shows how strong the relationship is between Charlie and Candace. Nina Dobrev was fantastic in those scenes, but you'll have to watch the director commentary to hear his reasons for leaving them out of the final cut. Good enough reasons, but glad they are on the deleted scenes. There's actually 2 commentaries which are both worth watching (listening).

It's been mentioned a few times, but Charlie's High School entry was delayed a year because of his "problems". According to the script, Charlie's 15 at the start of the film (and turns 16 over Christmas), Sam, Mary Elizabeth and Alice are all 17 (i.e. at the lower end of the range for Seniors) and Patrick is 18.
There's therefore only about 2 years between Charlie and Sam. Still a bit of a gap, but not as big as usual between freshmen and seniors.
