Why all the American hate?

I've been to California twice (in late 2012 and early 2013) and been treated incredibly well every place I went. (I'm Chinese).

Perhaps California is a bad example, but I'm astounded by the level of hate at Americans in general, almost as if they're breeding the next Hitler.

From clerks to car-wash attendants to cashiers, I've had nothing but friendly greetings and impeccable service. Obviously, it wouldn't be realistic to say it was PERFECT, but generally I can't recall a single event where I was peeved enough to keep it in my memory banks. In fact, I was extremely impressed.

I've studied in Australia for close to 8 years and though there are many friendly people as well, I don't think it's close to the level I found while in America. Yet people just unabashedly love the Aussies.

Frankly, I think Americans have let themselves become whipping boys for far too long.

America is a land of false pride and the belief in self-entitlement without working to earn it. You will come to learn that more if you spend a bit more time than a couple of brief trips, and with social interactions that go beyond service (cashiers, waitresses, etc).

As with any country, you get your mix with the people. But you will find a very strong number of people who have that sense of pride and self-entitlement without earning it. Only in America can you find a number of people who would say something as stupid as this: "America is #1" --"So, what other countries have you lived in to think that?" --"None, America is #1! I don't need to go anywhere else!" <-- This is the epitome of what is wrong with a great number of Americans. They might genuinely live in the best country in the world, but making such a strong and confident statement typically needs a bit more research and knowledge and work behind it or else it's just plain dumb.

Some Americans are so dumb and arrogant that they think the world envies them. They're like the analogical equivalent of the fat girl at school who think everyone looks at her funny because she's so beautiful. Fortunately there are Americans who know better, and some of the smartest people in the world live there. Yet what represents the more 'average' citizen can be quite depressing. There are dumb people in all kinds of countries, but something about America really makes being dumb seem like something worth being proud to be.

I think a lot of that effect is created by their "you can be anyone you want" culture. it is drilled into kids since the young age and people grow up thinking they are more important than they really are, thus expecintg everyone to love them without actually earning it. It would be much more healthier to teach the kids that some people are good at one thing while others are other, and you have to find what your good at instead of "Be whatever you want". because when you have 300 million wannabe presidents there wont be anyone to reign over.

America is collapsing so don't worry about it. It is a 3rd rate nothing country now. So guess Americans won't be spending any tourist $$$ they no longer have in your country any more.

As an American, it does get tiring. Especially when our troops, ships and planes arrive loaded with supplies and trained personnel to help anyone around the world.

We buy their goods and gas and employ their people from overseas. They don't even have to live here. It's via phone and internet. Our borders are open. A lot of Hollywood is non American and nobody complains until we remake one of "their" films. etc.

But yet everyone hates us.

A friend recently shared a photo of the home her father grew up in in Kentucky. The home was literally a shack with a pump in front for water. Her father said that snow blew through the slats in the walls in the winter. Her father recently sold a company that he started with nothing and worked hard at building for 30 years. He sold the company for over 2 Billion dollars. That is America.

It truly is the land of opportunities if you try hard and are creative. The USA is one of the most giving countries (I'm talking about the citizens not the government btw) for they do give a lot to charities and when natural disasters happen anywhere in the world they are one if not the first country to give aid. Sadly enough we have Hollywood that not only dumbs down Americans but other people all over the world (especially in Europe and Oz) with reality shows and the likes. I've lived abroad (London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Sao Paolo) and every place had it's uniqueness and beauty but I do have to agree that Americans are generally nicer people. So going w the original poster, I do agree with you. But we get a bad rep because of people like Donald trump and his pathetic followers!

You have very, very limited experience with the United States. I love LA too, having vacationed there a few times. Just remember that China and the US are roughly the same size. You would have a rather different impression if you visited my home state of Alabama for example.

Because feeling hate is more appealing to them then worrying about their own issues? Anything they say about us is fine opinion wise but to hate anything is sad.
