Pitiful worldbuilding. What are ideas that would make Avatar more interesting?
Pandora is one of the least creative sci-fi worlds I’ve ever seen. Even bad Roger Corman B-movies like Planet of Terror and Battle Beyond the Stars have sci-fi mythos and worldbuilding more interesting than this. The one thing I like is the way living things have the ability to physically and spiritually bond with their tail tendril things. That’s cool. The rest is so generic and boring.
Pandora is basically Earth. I mean they made a whole movie about saving the whales??? What are the odds this totally unique planet lightyears from earth also has whales? This film couldve very easily been set on a futuristic earth, and the Navi are just some tribe in Papau New Guinea or the Brazilian Rainforest or something. Everything about Pandora just reeks of earth. All the animals are just spinoff variations of earth animals.
Supposedly Avatar 3 has fire Navi, whatever that means, and it sounds like something finally potentially interesting, but who knows. Even the name Pandora is boring, that name has been used for fictional planets several times (Borderlands, anyone?)
I fail to see any grand master plan James Cameron has laid out for these movies other than “how cool can I make the CGI look?” What are some ideas that would the franchise more interesting? I think Cameron should absolutely pull a Prometheus and explain that Earth and Pandora are somehow related, maybe on some spiritual bond that humbles the humans. Maybe bring a Navi to Earth and assimilate them into American society like Jake Sulley got assimilated into the Navi. Make a Navi or two sympathize with the humans. Or give the humans a deeper motive besides “we want moneys”.
