There's no way to know how much it needs to make because there's so many varying budget amounts from separate sources.
Best guess, since this was a back to back production for 2 and 3 similar to the hobbit movies they probably put it all under one budget and hence have a giant price tag that keeps getting tossed around.
Keep this in mind... how much did amazon spend on TLOR show?? And it got $0 at the box office. HBO spent 250M for 4 or 5 years of rights to friends.
Avatar is going to end up on disney+ and will also bring in 1.5-2B at the BO. No way anybody is losing money on this deal.
Of course. And all the hand wringing was silly. The powers that be didn't give him a billion dollars to play with in the background without an understanding of how pre-sold more James Cameron spectacles would be. More Avatar was never in jeopardy. So expensive, swing for the fences, "Can he do it again??" has become part of the promotion. But this is no different from the Star Wars movies or Marvel phase whatever. Just wait until the last entry rolls around, the big conclusion, the finale. It will go to box office Valhalla. It'll be in theaters forever, then Disney+ forever, then in rotation on cable forever, like all the others of this ilk.
