While Top Gear can be entertaining, it's clear the producers have very little respect for the intelligence of the viewers. All the 'mishaps', all the dialogue is comprehensively scripted. It's much harder to enjoy the show once you realise this.
Yes, I agree and know what you (OP) mean. Sure the show was always scripted, but it was somewhat believable. Now the scripting is getting really lazy with making it believable. For instance in the Patagonia special, the scene where they were driving in a swamp, you could see the main road in the background in a couple shots. The swamp was just somewhere they pulled off the side of the road and tried to make it seem like they were driving some backroads detour.

The Patagonia Special seemed really forced, trying to redo the African trek again, after trying last year with the Burma special. Two bridge gags alone in Part 1. Mind I did have a Chev Beretta years ago that had similar electrical problems to the 928, I even had to rewire and splice the harness too!

Yeah, same formula, just change the location and cars. It actually reminded me of a scripted Discovery Channel show it felt that bad at times.
The best humor in these specials always seems to be the unscripted stuff - like when Clarkson discovered May had stolen a piece of his door in the Africa special. That reaction was pretty genuine.

I just finished howling with laughing at tonight's ambulance episode. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. For those who have, all I will say is "Hammond! You blithering idiot!" Scripted, yes. But hilarious; like a slapstick film. Well it was for me.
Agreed. I was pissing myself during the timed laps :D
Anyone who comes on here whingeing about it is just watching it for the express purpose of trying to find something to complain about. I'm sure I could do the same if I deliberately watched something I knew I didn't like and was a joyless, mean-spirited individual who wanted to spread my general malcontent amongst everyone.
I agree; the ambulance stuff was scripted and silly... but I can't remember when I last laughed as much; I laughed till I cried and feared I might need an ambulance!
I agree that the Ambulance episode was the best of the new series so far, the part where they were being driven round the track by the Stig whilst performing medical procedures in the back was hilarious and reminded me of Top Gear at it's peak. I thought it did get a bit silly towards the end though during the segment of racing around the fake town and trying to find the hospital. Even Star in a Reasonably Priced Car was entertaining for once but I do wish that Jeremy would stop pretending that he's a massive F1 fan and accept that he's just a casual follower of motor sport.

Of course some of it's fake and scripted. people have known that for years but people watch it for the humour and the 3 of them acting like oafs.
that's not to say some of it isn't fake though.

I know it was always scripted; my point is recent seasons have become too obvious because producers have gotten lazy. I should have spelled this out clearer but I had no idea so many people reading these imdb forums were so fvcking stupid.

Ok i see your point. maybe there is a case to have it more spontaneous and less scripted. at the moment it's like the 3 of them are in a bit of a comedy show but it's still entertaining.
but yes if we ever see them on Top gear again a less scripted show with more peril and real life thrills but with the same humour would probably please even more people. i don't really know why they haven't gone more in that direction.

Totally agree with the last seasons suffering from lazy writing. The show has gone downhill for some time now which is why I don't think it's all that bad it's getting new hosts and May, Clarkson and Hammond getting a new show. Maybe both the show and the old hosts get a fresh start and we get two good shows instead of one steadily worsening one.
They were never trying to hide it. They just never outright scream it was scripted....how dense can you be to think it wasn't.......did you ever pay attention to their shenanigans?
10+ years ago it was at least believable that the cross-country races were genuine & not scripted. The producers have become lazier & lazier over the years in this respect. I thought this point was obvious but I wasn't taking into account morons such as yourself.
Nothing per se against scripting here, depends on how good it is. Tried to sit through the Patagonia episode and it's obvious the well of ideas had run dry - an extended episode of the trio driving on varying surfaces whilst bickering.
It's not too dissimilar to Alias Smith And Jones after the death of Pete Duel - but with the added "bonus" of another game of car football to look forward to (was it really the Argentinians who pulled the plug on this one?).
When Clarkson was punching the producer in the face, was he thinking of someone else? Or was he just doing everyone a favour for the producer's continued lack of fresh ideas?
Maybe it's that the original three made the fake look real, while American TG has finally taken seven years to feel organic. Anyone with selective memories, the first few series of May/Clarkson/Hammond weren't that good either.
This new UK TG feels just as forced, and fake as the first two seasons of US TG.
