Why was this rated R?
There was only 1 f-word, no onscreen sex at all, and only very brief violence that wasn't graphic at all. How did this get an R rating?

shareWhere I live (Mexico) it was rated b, which I guess would be pg. I actually found it very lacking in profanity.

I live in Mexico too B it's the equal to Pg13 our R would be C.
shareThe phrase "C^<ks^<ker" is an automatic "R". It's only in "J. Edgar" twice.
The film's one use of the F-Bomb would pass in a "PG-13" though. That's how the MPAA roles.
If not for the two uses of "c^<ks^<ker" I'm convinced this film woulda been a "PG-13". Ironically, in the "PG" rated "E.T." Elliot can call his brother "pen!$ breath". (1982). Hmmmm...

"The reservist formerly known as JO2"

shareNo clue. I was so pissed after i came out of the theater.

Watch "This Film is Not Yet Rated" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493459/
to get a sense of how warped and out of touch the MPAA is.
This may not answer the topic but it will shed some light.

F-bomb
Plus two uses of the word c*ck-sucker
Plus one dead child shown graphically mutilated
equals RATED R
*beep* if I know...
Still trying to think how those *beep* rate...
What gets us in trouble is not what we don't know; It's what we know for sure that just ain't so.

he listened to recorded sex scene and it was "seen" as shadows.
shareThe reason for which they *presumably* gave the movie an R-rating was because they use the term
C O C K S * * K E R (big whoop!!)
twice in the movie, and Nixon's character drops an F-bomb towards the end. That's it.
