What Was SO Bad About Blake Lively?

I don't see what she did that is earning her all of these terrible reviews on here. She was average to me, just like everyone else in this film. Average performances, average story, average overall. The only thing I thought was bad was the writing (at times). Everyone's mentioned the "wargasms" line by now, but yeah ..

The homophobes are just pissed they didn't see her naked but had two men's ass in their face. Nice to see an actress who has enough self respect she knows she don't need to take her clothes off haven't you seen the threads? that's all they complain about

reply

nah, i don't think it's homophobia, it's social fear...far easier to agree with the crowd than stand alone...nothing new here

i for one, have always disliked blake lively..as i put in another post, the only think she's ever been decent in, and i stress decent (this is not meryl streep), was the town...

but she was precisely what was necessary for the role..hot little piece, with a surfer chic vibe, that comes from money and likes a little danger in her life...she did a great job in this role...great...

wargasm? well even though i just praised her, i can practically see the little hamster on his wheel in her head, so i'm pretty sure she didn't write the line, right? she just delivered it...i thought it was a moderately witty line, but hit or miss, she didn't come up with it

it is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it

Exactly. We shouldn't be EXPECTING Shakespeare from this character. She was a rather simple character, and Blake Lively got her just right. That's all she needed to be. People just can't think of anything more imaginative to complain about. And the "wargasms" line......again, people have a problem with it because THEY wouldn't say something like that. Would a spacey surfer chick come up with something like that...in an attempt to sound clever? Sure.

Sorry Freud, the complaints are actually based on Lively's horribly unconvincing acting. All you dunces with your stupid psychoanalysis are laughable.

The "wargasm" line was completely laughoutloudable!

reply

Agreed. I literally cracked up at that line and I don't think that was their intention, lol. :)

She's Blake Lively?

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

Anybody can see Blake Lively naked because the genius took naked pictures of HERSELF which ended up on the internet. If she were a good actress (and didn't get roles just because she's cute), I wouldn't care if she got naked or not. But it's just adding insult to injury in her case.

It's not that I'm "homophobic" about Stone practically giving a colonoscopy to the male actors, but that was apparently necessary because Lively didn't want anyone (or apparently anyone who's never heard of the internet) getting a glimpse of her nipples--even though she's taken on a role as a slutty girl who is passed back and forth between drug dealers and has multiple sex scenes.

But let me see if I can draw a comparison. Suppose a not-so-good male actor refuses to carry a gun. Yet he insists on playing a cop and so the director has to shove his camera up the ass of the guy who plays his partner so no one notices that he's got a plastic Mattel gun instead of a real one. But I'm not trying to bash on Lively. Just let her stick to TV and "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 5" and give roles like this to the actresses that can do them right

reply

I know I am WAY late to the game, but you summarized my exact feelings on this! I just commented something similar on the Strike Back board about her.

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to cast a woman, who won't even let her ass be filmed, in a role that has 3 sex scenes, one of them a threesome, and a rape? I LOL'd at the cop with a gun comparison.

reply

the real problem is with Ophelia not with Blake Lively

reply

She's not a terrible actress, but she's just a really annoying young bimbo, and I think that's why people dislike her (or at least me). Actually she was borderline terrible in The Town but she was better in Savages, only slightly.

reply

How is she a bimbo?

reply

Thanks. Way to be condescending. I know what the word means. I don't see how Blake fits the description.

reply

Sorry, it was a bit condescending. I actually don't know much about her, but she looks and acts like one so I just assume she is one. She might be one of those 'Legally Blonde' types who surprises us with her intellect, but I really doubt it.

reply

Well, thanks for apologizing. I guess we'll just agree to disagree about her being a bimbo, lol.

reply

I agree with OP, she was "capable" in the role. It wasn't Oscar worthy, but she fit the bill nicely and did what she did with the role. Her narrating didn't bug me either. Not sure why everyone was on her about it.

Plus she's so dang BEAUTIFUL...ever since I saw her in Green Lantern...man, breathtakingly gorgeous.

Ok, decent, capable average seem to be the consensus regarding her performance. Much like the rating the movie got itself. Her actress peers, like megan fox or amber heard, probably would have done a similar job.

The problem was more so in the character from the screenplay, I think. The character Ophelia from the book was very clear to me whereas the film version was kind of muddled. The lines were supremely stupid and there are plenty in the novel but that context makes them feel cooler and funnier.

I think Blake's strongest scene is when she tires of watching tv and eating pizza and she's yelling basically at herself and the camera. "I know I could be here for, like, 7-10 days" hahaha. We're able to see how absolutely delusional she is, even after being kidnapped she's still fancies herself immune to reality.

That said, Blake seemed to do the best she could with what was on the page.
