Maggie ruins movies

Some people put out positive energy, some people negative. This woman puts out ugly vibes. From her face to her attitude, in every character she plays, it's pure ugliness oozing from her being. I empathize with anyone forced to work along side her, and have a hard time deciding to watch or continue watching a movie she's in.

On the other hand, Jake is awesome.

It should be standard that any asshead who cowardly complains about the physical "ugliness" of any person upload an undoctored photo of their own face and body up for scrutiny at the same time. C'mon you kids, what are you afraid of?

For some reason I haven't really hated her in any other movies, but this one was particularly nauseating. Her character was just the worst. And the writing didn't do her any favors-- she really had no redeeming qualities. After the first couple scenes with her I thought it would be OK and make sense if her character left the band a few scenes later, but that didn't happen.

THE WORST thing was any scene with her playing her keyboard. I was pretty close to just stopping the movie a couple times. It literally made my stomach upset.

Also, the music was genuinely horrible.

I agree! I don't think she's physically ugly, although she does kinda have that 'resting b!tchface syndrome'...she just emanates negativity. She doesn't have any appeal, to me at least. But some people must really like her, otherwise her career wouldn't be as successful as it is and that's what I don't understand...

I like her and I don't understand why people are so against her. Here she does what she has to do and very well too.

Like another commenter mentioned, I first saw Maggie in Secretary, and I loved it, and her. But for those that feel she has a negative presence, if you haven't seen it, my absolute favourite film of hers is Stranger Than Fiction. I adore that movie, and I don't think she has that lingering negative vibe in it.

I have got to admit, even though I don't necessarily dislike Maggie Gyllenhall as much as the OP, when I first caught glimpse of her in the band, my very first, impulsive thought was "Is that Maggie Gyllenhall? Uh oh..."

I get that her character is supposed to be "crazy" (but not crazy) and represents total abandonment within her art, but seriously, the character and its depiction is really messy. In the end, the movie is telling us "Clara was right all along, don't you feel bad for dismissing her?"

Actually movie, no. No I don't feel bad, because I never once caught a glimpse that there was a decent, relatable human lurking underneath the whole brooding artist facade that was worth any sympathy. And believe me, I am absolutely the the kind of person who can relate to that character type.

YEah I'm not a fan of Maggie Gyllenhall either. Her face looks like she's got a lemon stuck in her mouth that causing her endless sourness. However I didn't despise her as much as I did in The Dark Knight. She is literally the worst thing in The Dark Knight and just unlikable. She shouldnt have been chosen to replace the gorgeous Katie Holmes.

Cant help think there is some Latent sexism in people's opinions of MG.

Possibly in light of having a famous brother. Either way most of the critcism is utterly unfounded.

reply

I agree.

It's ok to like more than one actor. :))

I agree. I probably wouldn't have even given this film a look if I'd known she was in it. I don't enjoy her acting and I have an extreme aversion to her face.

That said, I'm glad I watched this interesting and darkly funny film. I ignored or tolerated her scenes and enjoyed the other actors and actresses.
