THIS FILM IS *beeping* SCARY!!!!

Obviously , "scary" is subjective to the viewer, but I have to say, my wife and I both were scared for days after watching this! Absolutely frightening, one of the scariest movies I've ever seen and I am super excited to see Insidious 2(though Im trying not to have super high expectations, sequels have really been letting my down lately) We are seeing Conjuring tonight for the first time and Insidious 2 tomorrow, so Im hoping to really keep the scare level high until October 31st! If I dont respond by then, its because I dont want any spoilers!

What say you? Were you scared? *Tiptoe...through the tulips....*

I thought I was the only one! Like really, everyone keeps saying that The Conjuring and Exorcist and The Ring etc were scarier than this, which i completely disagree with. I actually couldn't sleep for MONTHS. I was afraid to do anything. This is the only movie that has ever scared me. Thank god i'm not the only one!

reply

Can you elaborate on that? I keep seeing hardcore horror fans say this gave them nightmares or scared the crap out of them, and I look at them like they have ten eyes--because I thought this was boring and painful to sit through (I saw episodes of Rugrats that were scarier than this).

well what do you find scary?

reply

It's hard to say anymore since nothing affects me much these days. I dig psychological horror more than traditional "jump scares" if that helps.

reply

Well that's the rub. To be scary it has to be unexpected and the more you have seen the harder it is to surprise you. That's why I was surprised that Insidious was able to do it using familiar elements.

reply

I agree with you 100%. Don't know if you're about the same age as me, but ... perhaps the films that leave little to the imagination (not to mention the blood and gore films) are more appealing to a younger crowd, while people my age (over 30 - Ha!) need to be challenged by using our imagination. Psychological thrillers / horror movies are so much more thoughtful and intense than the slasher films I used to enjoy as a kid. That said, there was one scene in "Insidious" that I did find to be surprisingly original .... i.e. the scene where the young woman is in bed and sees / hears someone walking outside her bedroom window. Scary? Yes !!!

reply

I'm 21, and I've had this gripe about movies since I was a teenager. I love slasher films, especially ones that are from the 80s or have the soul of one from the time period. I wish horror movies today relied on mental scares, kind of like how The Blair Witch Project was scary (at least to me) because of the unknown rather than loud noises. It would be nice to see more body horror type movies like The Beast Within or The Fly, but I don't want that idea to get milked dry either.

It's hard for me to think of anything from Insidious that I liked, but I'll give Elise, Specs, and Tucker the most slack; as they were the better of the cast in my eyes--which is the only reason I might give the third chapter a chance.

Yes, I was completely horrified seeing it. I saw it with my boyfriend and I was clinging to him and complaining I don't want to see it anymore because it's too scary. He thought the film was silly.
My best friend was scared sh_tless too, I begged her to see the movie again together for an entire evening but she refused!
My top frightening movies in no particular order.
- The shining (I liked it so much that I replayed it immediately after seeing it)
-Insidious
-The Grudge
-Shutter
-1408 with John Cusack (this one was non stop PURE TERROR)
-Case 49
Two more movies that really scared me "mentally" but not in the yelling-like-a-13-year-old-girl-at-a -Justin-Bieber-concert were The ring and The Others.
Shutter Island scared me too but that's an entirely different league of movies.

reply

WOW, what a great list, I agree on all of those, aside from Shutter, which I have not seen, but I will sooo make it a point to add it to my list this year for our halloween movie marathon!!! If we agree on the others(The Shining which is an all time fav of mine and 1408 was unbelievably scary!), then I am sure Shutter will not disappoint! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, yes, you definitely need to see Shutter if you haven't. It's a great movie. Maybe after you see it can you remember to post here your feedback. :)

reply

I hope you're not talking about the Shutter remake. It's as scary as a Disney movie compared to the original.

I felt the same after watching it for the first time. I can't wait for Insidious 3.

"I recommend "Sinister""

Oh man, do I agree with you there! Sinister is VERY scray and "Mr Boogie" haunted me for days after watching it! Any other recommendations? We have another horror marathon coming up this October, so any suggestions are welcomed!

I thought Insidious 2 was quite good as well; not as great as this one, but still a pretty decent sequel. Looking forward to Insidious: Chapter 3.

I was a tad diappointed with Insidious 2, only because I had very high hopes that it would bring out the FEAR that I got watching the first one. Sadly, it did not but overall, I DID enjoy it and would agree that it was a very decent sequel! I am going to keep my hopes a bit lower for 3, but I am looking forward to it!
