Better overall? Insidious
Scarier? Sinister

Better: Close but Insidious barely edges it out.
Scarier: Insidious ending aside, Sinister was scary as hell!

Both films were pretty frightening though, especially the endings.

i thought sinsiter was far more scary
for better? although i though insidious had more original ideas (the whole "out of body" thing was awesome!), i thought that sinister was more well made. i saw sinsiter over a month ago and still cannot stop thinking about it. ethan hawke was absolutely mesmorizing

Sinister is scarier and a better film too.I thought Insidious is quite overrated and didn't do it for me.It starts pretty well, then goes down a bit and then almost falls apart.

What?? I found Insidious to be rather scary, but Sinister.. not at all. I guess it's because they used the clichéy stuff like a face suddenly appearing on screen and a lot of jump scares (which is stuff we know that'll happen). Simply not scary anymore.

better overall: Insidious
scarier: Insidious

Yes, I think Sinister is better on both as well. I was dissapointed with the ending of Sinister, but, I was truly frightened during the middle of Sinister, so it scores major points with me. I watched Insidious last night and I kept waiting for something terrifying to happen and it never did, sure there were scary moments, but I feel the film is overrated as well.

Insidious.... Sinister uses these kind of kids that arent scary... Kids arent scary to be honest.

Sinister was better for me, it actually scared me while Insidious although quite cool and interesting just didn't have that extra mile to make it stick with me and be terrifying.

I also thought Insidious had its stupid cliches. I found the "demon ghosts" pretty ordinary like people dressed up as zombies. And the man with fire as a face in the beginning was quite scary, but as the movie went along he got more camp.

Some people are afraid of heights, some people aren't. Some people are afraid of spiders, some people aren't. You see where this is going? I know a few people who find kids in horror movies really creepy.

reply

I know. They are indeed, but its a little tiresome.

Both movies are ok, but overall not that great. Insidious had interesting idea, I don't remember many movies doing whole "astral projection" theme.

but... I hated both movies for the same reason - LOUD PIANO EXPLODING MUSIC!

those scares in both Sinister and Insidious would be five times more effective if they didn't have "exploding piano" in background. In both movies I had to turn volume down when some "scary" scene is about to happen, because I was afraid of the goddamn loud noise piercing my ear.

In Sinister, I could kinda forgive that, because it's director never made any movie before it, but in Insidious... not that much. I was actually quite surprised by this, and checked again if it was in fact directed by James Wan, because I don't remember him doing those stupid gimmicks in Saw\Dead Silence\Death Sentence.

In terms of the storytelling... Insidious was lot better in terms of a screenplay (altho, third act felt rushed), Sinister was mixed - it had some good moments, and some rather horrible moments. (the noise was done by squirrels!? Seriously!?)

Insidiousis better and waaaay more scarier.

Both have a great first part and a weaker second part.

Sinister is more innovative, but it doesnt jump scare. It tries to "disturb" more than to "scare". Insidious is more classic, also in the sense that it references a lot of classic films. So, it does a lot of jump scares. Sinister is more artsy, but Insidious is overall more fun.

What Im trying to say is both have good parts, and weak parts.

I prefer Insidious on both accounts.

I saw both films in theaters and Insidious had me on edge from beginning to end. Sinister, while creeping me the hell out for the first half, lost me in the second half with the badly made up ghost kiddies... and then that final shot was absolutely idiotic and knocked the film down at least two points.
