Show’s Opening Credits Suck

I hate the opening credits so much that I fast-forward my DVR through them. The “song”’is annoying and harshly recorded, and all the actors in the credits are 7 years younger than they are today. How much could it cost to shoot some new credits?

reply

Lol i know i said the same thing a while ago the credits need re shot with new footage, Debbie is a little kid in them and shes had a baby at this point and nearly all the kids are grown up except Liam.

Thank you! Great minds think alike.

NOOOOOOOoooooo!

reply

“NOOOOOooooo!” meaning that you can’t stomach the thought of seeing those godawful credits again?

Or “NOOOOOooooo!” meaning that you think I am the godawful thing here?

Or both?

I love the credits the way they are. So nostalgic. Like looking through the family photo album.

we're cool R_Kane

As ever, you make a good point, LauraGrace. You also made me happy; but could we please get different music for the photo album? Its noise is grating and (in audiophile terms) bright, uninspired, outright unmelodious, and how does the lyric intertwine with the show’s narrative? I don’t hear it. Off the top of my head, I would substitute the early 60s hit Eve Of Destruction for this caterwauling. Your thoughts?

reply

Eve of Destruction comes from a politically hopeless place. That's not Gallagher.
The Gallagher's are fighters. Let's look at their song......

Think of all the luck you got
Know that it's not for naught
You were beaming once before
But it's not like that anymore

Count all the moods you've known
Know they're not stuck in stone
You were patient once before
But it's not like that anymore

What is this down side
That you speak of
What is this feeling
You're so sure of

Round up the friends you got
Know that they're not for naught
You were willing once before
But it's not like that anymore

The time that you would never trade
Is equal to the effort made
You were simple once before
But it's not like that anymore

What is this down side
That you speak of
What is this feeling
You're so sure of

This is a fighter's song, a playful anthem of that was then/ this is now (now The Young Gallaghers are the Ones in empowered)
of questioning the way things are (the class system in America?), and declaring it bullshit, And doing it their way, shamelessly.

But, that's, like, just my opinion, man.

Thank you for taking the time to transcribe the lyric, LG! I never knew what the song said, because I can’t stand to listen to it, which means, for me, it is an ineffective theme song, and apparently one by some band that the producers appropriated for the show, because it came “close enough.” I suggested Eve of Destruction because that’s where I see the family as always being, while also denying it. Frank seems to think he can only win by cheating, and that’s not a fighter in my book. A fighter has hope and self-belief. I think the family feels doomed, like when they were talking about bailing Ian out of jail and Fiona said, “That’s part of being a Gallagher.” Yes, they do stick up for each other, I grant that; but they seem to think that it still won’t come to anything good. They’ve never had anyone to set an example of “good” for them. This is why I really hope that Fiona becomes a big success in real estate, and give them that example, that hope, that belief.

Having said all that, if you like the song, LG, then I am happy, because I like you.

I used to like the opening credits. But ever since the show started going downhill, the credits became nothing more than a sad reminder of what the show used to be like. And I do agree with you on the age gap factor. The opening credits just don't make sense anymore. I think the producers of the show decided to keep the opening credits, in an attempt to hold on to any real Shameless nostalgia they have left.

reply

That’s a very good point. Change the contents, but keep the same label on the can. I bet Frank thought of that!

It is weird to see that they aren't that young anymore. It feels like it hasn't even been on for almost the whole 2010's decade. I remember 2011 like it was yesterday.

I know. It's strange seeing the whole cast grow up. But that's what I originally liked about the series. The Gallaghers became such familiar faces. Even though the Gallaghers obviously are fictional...it was almost like you knew them. But I stopped feeling that way ever since last season. Now I could care less. But the series was good while it lasted. I'll always cherish the early Shameless episodes. Because I remember during 2010-2011, the show line-up on Showtime was so weak and uninteresting, that putting Shameless into the mix was such a nice change of pace. Next to Weeds and The Sopranos, Shameless was one of the only tv shows I actually enjoyed.
