... and defeating bad guys, was he a former army folks, some op, secret agent, former or otherwise cop and if not, where did he get all those skills and training, and on a lesser note, how did he become "mute"?

shareOf course but I still didn't understand that part. I might've missed something but I don't think it was explained, not to mention, the movie was silent.
shareWell he's shot in the throat in the beginning of the movie after chasing the guys who shot his kid. Then the next like half hour is him in the hospital, getting surgeries, coming home, not being able to speak, getting the voice box in the mail and trying it out only to throw it away in frustration...he's got the bullet scar on his neck they focus on through the whole movie...
