By critic James Berardinelli.

And the fact that not only did he rate it as being better than the original Swedish one, but gave it full marks (in his case, its 4 stars out of 4, which is basically a 5-star rating and possibly 10 out of 10) and rated it even better than some of David Fincher's other works (including in my opinion his greatest masterpiece "Se7en")?

reply

Yes. It was a great adaptation.

reply

I respect his opinion but in my opinion, however, the original is much better and the remake is just about 0K but is not among his, Fincher's, better works overall.

Also, few in my mind if ANY remakes can actually be considered "better" than the original.

reply

I agree. It's also a better adaptation than the Swedish version, and Rooney Mara, IMO, captures the essence of the book character better in this movie.

reply

It also follows the book more accurately.

reply

Yes. That's what I meant when I said it was a better adaptation.

I get why people who only saw the Swedish version first (without reading the book) prefer it. Noomi Rapace did an awesome job and played a compelling character. But she played Lisbeth differently from how she was written in the books. Rooney Mara nailed the character as written.

Many people don't care how good an adaptation a movie is, so I get why not everyone will share my preference.

reply

I agree. I do also like the Swedish mini-series and I own both. I sure wish Fincher would have done the other two!

reply

Unfortunately, I think the US version came out too soon after the Swedish version. Many people rejected it immediately because of the Swedish version.

But I also wish he'd finished the trilogy!

reply

I'd certainly rate the trailer and marketing a 10/10. I'm pretty sure a lot of the rave reviews were still high off of that influence.

I liked the review. I really think he uplifted the work more than it is. So he does deaerve big credit because without this version I dont think I would’ve liked it.
Seven is great and he basically made it but the source is totally different and I think Seven could’ve been great regardless who directed it while The girl..., is more difficult to produce and added with his style he made it awesome whereas if it would’ve been any other way I don’t think I would’ve liked it.
