The cat was Satan and the dog was God. Anybody?

If you were to really analyze this movie...and put a religious spin on it you could say the cat was the Devil and God was the Dog..and when he went over board with the killing (crossing the invisible line between good and evil) the dog left him (ran out of the apartment) whilst the cat stayed in there.
just a thought.

How many hours did you put in that thought, Einstein? LOL No, It was just aspects of his personality. His sexuality, really.

There we were, minding our own business, when kids started killing themselves all over my property.

Was that a dig at me, or the OP?! Either way, ad hominems are not cool, some people come on here to have (relatively!) mature discussions about films they like, love and hate without any name calling.

"Hot lesbian witches!"

reply

Not a bad analysis. I can see it. Both cat and dog left their ways as Jerry died.

reply

While I think this is a pretty good theory, I think a freudian interpretation is more relevant, considering the general psychological themes of the movie - The cat representing the Id - the human desires and impulses, while the dog represents the super-ego, the conscience.

reply

"Freud" and "relevant" do not belong in the same sentence.

If you were to really analyze this movie...and put a religious spin on it, you could say that you're an idiot.

There are multiple references to angels, the devil and Jesus. There IS a religious element to this film and the ending is meant to be open to interpretation. There are several instances where it implies the POSSIBILITY that the voices in Jerry's head COULD be something other than his mental illness.

reply

Oh, I thought it was more the other way around. That god and the devil and angels & such are probably nothing else than (his) mental illness.
But I could be wrong ;0)

But the far more important question is that if we'd say that the dog is god (oh look! Read it in reverse) and the cat is the devil (doesn't work here though) then what is the deer?

Anyway, I thought the therapists way to put it when she talked about his mother was quite spot on.

You are really hovering over that interpretation, I wouldnt really say that that is God or Satan but that is just his conscience being manifested, that is his evil and good side of thoughts. period. Everyone has them to some extent, but not the manifestations of course

reply

Yes good versus evil.

Plenty of cats I have owned have been evil, they do give you the evil eye >.< and go from zero to bitch in 2 seconds lol.

The dog really didn't seem like much of a God to me. He wasn't all that smart, didn't give our boy that great of advice.

Hmm. Interesting.
