Underrated as Hell!
I saw this tonight, expecting to laugh my way through its badness. I was shocked. This is a fine alien invasion movie, definitely not worthy of the hatred and negative reviews.

shareYep way underrated. I loved it. There was room for improvement sure but I gave it 8/10.

When I first saw this, it had an imdb rating under 4, so obviously I went in with extremely low expectations. After seeing it, I realise that most people went in with mega high expectations. What exactly were they expecting for a low budget film?
I really can't understand all the negativity. It's not a great film, but for it's budget, it's much better than it could have and should have been, especially when compared to Battle LA which had seven times the budget. I think it was the same effects team who worked on both films, but this one has some much better shots and effects.
The fact that this film is rated so low really does bewilder me. Again, it's not fantastic, but it's definitely no worse than other big budget Hollywood films and deserves more than a 4.4 rating.
I rate it a 6.5 for a great premise. All it needs to get an 8
is to have a more satisfying conclusion. Hopefully, the Strauses will follow up with a sequel.
I disliked the characters at the start. Arrogant, spoilt, great bodies and looks, etc etc - type of people who are unfortunately more often than not jerks IRL (i.e. jocks).
However, I really liked the aliens, their technology, the fact that they weren't human shaped and came with interesting abilities that thought outside the box (Battle LA had machines that were kinda similar to humans, firing machine guns FFS) the manner of the invasion, the fact that the humans were absolutely annihilated by this powerful alien force, the battle scenes that we do see from the viewers (especially the fighter pilot), and the fact that we get a really good discussion mid way through the movie from the middle aged Mexican guy (instead of everyone just following some random hearthrob).
I also loved the ending. Whilst I didn't like the flash card scenes, the actual ending of the humanoid alien Jarrett fighting for his still-human wife and unborn baby was absolutely phenomenal imo. I don't remember a film doing this, other than maybe District 9.
Overall I think Skyline is exceptionally underrated, and I can't for the life of me understand why people love Cloverfield yet hate this. Cloverfield is a horribly cliched movie that is essentially Godzilla meets Blair Witch - there's even a part in Godzilla where a guy runs around with a camera filming things, and that's what Cloverfield is. I thought Skyline gave a much better enemy that made more sense.
i have just watched this too and i too thought it was ok really i didnt like the bits in the ship it was horrid and scary but the ending ??? but better than i thought the aliens were cool x...
Woefully underrated in my opinion. The pacing was good ,never boring. Acting was decent, aliens were interesting. Fight scenes were believeable and well done. This film is clearly not worthy of the criticism it has gotten although many on this forum seem to like it. I would give it a 5.5 which means it is worth watching but not paying for. My scale tends to weight movies lower than others.
Consider that this movie was made on a supposed $10 million dollar budget and it probably deserves to get bumped up a full point. Battle: Los Angeles was truly horrible and that one had seven times the budget.
I loved it too and will be changing my score.
I was a bit down on the ending though. That made me go WTF?
But for once Earth got pwned.
No twist
No surprise victory
I like
I agree 100 percent. Every othr invasion movie has a come-from-behind victory where the humans prevail. Nope, in Skyline, even F-22 jets and nukes can't beat back the slimebag aliens. Its a letdown, but i guess the surprsie was humanity not winning. Works for me and where's Skyline 2??
shareA "realistic" alien invasion movie which follows the experience of several civilians who did not suddenly become superheroes but just thrashed around more realistically with all their human frailties struggling to come to terms with the onslaught and survive...but failing. Yes, this was a good enough idea - not unique but good enough, and we can also accept that the aliens just might be able to give us a good hiding (more than likely if aliens were ever to show up).
Sadly, the poor acting was a real letdown. The film could have been a classic as the aliens do not accommodatingly fall down and die even when nuked, or display some convenient Achilles heel for the humans to exploit as per standard alien invasion sci-fi actioners. What ruined Skyline for me particularly was an awful performance from the lead actor, Eric Balfour. His character was clearly an anti-hero, but what an insipid and uninspiring performance he gave. We needed to see a civilian overwhelmed by the events around him - including his girlfriends pregnancy - unable to act heroically, nor even able to make some sort of selfless and brave sacrifice. A fantastic, though somewhat challenging, role you'd think for a lead actor (Bruce Willis need not apply!). Sadly, Balfour looked out of his depth, lost and apparently unable to figure out his character's motivation, reactions or impulses (perhaps he was simply unhappy playing a sad loser post-invasion). I did not care whether the aliens zapped him or not, in fact, I wish they had got rid of him the moment they first landed. A very poor performance at the core of a potentially good film, and it destroyed it. No this film is not underrated, but it was sadly ruined. 4.5/10
this movie was fun man common if you wanna see intellect scfi movie go see Moon and Europa Report (which i both liked 2) yes the movie is very underrated very!
shareI agree, even though it was way outdrawn at some points, it was a spectacular sci-fi movie. I loved the ending.
But then again generally IMDB reverses the score; that is movies below 5 are generally better than those above 8. Take that piece of crap Inception for instance. Now that movie was a joke.
Are you serious?
It was the biggest steaming pile of *beep* that's ever graced the silver screen. I was sat in the cinema grieving over my £5.00.
They kept the trailers short by showing one very intriguing moment where thousands of people get sucked up into the ship, it was a blatant lie about the films quality. This film was a shameless lie, I dont think they was even expecting anybody to like it. They are too busy laughing from their deck chairs in Barbados.
I love this movie! So underrated, you are right! Seems like this is one of those either love it or hate it movies. Definitely seems to be developing somewhat of a cult/underdog status,, though. A lot of people love it despite it being a critical failure.
It's all for you, oh hungry Moon.
Yeah, I don't really get all the bad reviews either.
Is it a cinematic masterpiece? No. But it's good for what it is.
Nobody mentions how good the invasion monsters were! Those creatures hovering in the sky over LA were really menacing and convincing aliens. They scared me. I could imagine that when the aliens finally get here they'll look like these unpleasant creatures. Shame about the script though. There's no story, no characters (beautiful actresses though), no surprises of any kind - except the bad behaviour of the aliens. But it's worth watching for the beastly aliens.
shareThe film had a very expensive and downright misleading advertsing campaign. Specifically, billboard where thousands of people were sucked up into gigantic ships.
It was sold as epic big-budget sci-fi like Independence Day where the action spanned entire continents. Instead what they got was an 'apartment drama'.
Hence, the audience felt like there were bilked for their money.
Yes, the aliens were downright amazing and undeniably scary.
