I honestly think the biggest insult with the ending wasn't necessarily that it ended abruptly, but that it tried to push the audience to a website. While this is not necessarily 'wrong', it was a bit of an insult-- even if the film ended abruptly without that, it wouldn't have been as much of an insult, but with it, it felt to a lot of audience members as if the film was saying, "we're too lazy to go on, just... here... read the rest."
THAT aspect is what made people hate it.
So, for me personally, had they simply edited out that call to the website, I probably wouldn't have disliked the film so much. I do think the story meanders aimlessly near the end, and a lot of people expected some resolution myself included, and I still would like an actual third act instead of it just sort of... ending because it was too tired to go on, but that accursed website ad just...
Point being-- myself as an audience member, take out that website at the end, I wouldn't be fully satisfied but I would feel a LOT less insulted.
