what are some other good horror movies stylistically similar to this?

It seems that almost every horror movie I have seen over the past 20 years has either been a comedy-horror in the style of SCREAM or torture porn like HOSTEL. I don't really like either of those things, I always found the emphasis on jokes in movies like SCREAM to be misplaced (I want to be scared when watching a horror movie, not amused) and I find torture porn movies to be repugnant.

That is why I loved this movie so much - full on horror, no comedy, but the horror comes from the mood and reactions rather than gore and over the top violence! I loved it! what are some other good horror movies that are not comedy-horror or torture porn? preferably similar in style to this!

I HATE to compare these two movies, because they are worlds apart in almost every way, but check out "As above, so below." Things the two movies have in common: shaky cam, history, creepy vibes, darkness most of the movie, and no sex what so ever. No boobs or nothing. AASB has actual history, better actors, well prepared characters who did their research, and there's basically just a ton if depth to the movie. If you can stand this movie, you'll like AASB.

These aren't all stylistically similar, but you may want to check these out because they're definitely not comedy or pure torture-porn:

Sinister
The Others
It Follows
Insidious
the Paranormal Activity series
Silent House

The Descent (the unrated cut doesn't make the film any scarier, but it definitely ups the wow-factor and elevates it from above-average horror to classic material...so by all means watch the longer version)
Quarantine
The Den

If you're going to watch "Quarantine", I highly suggest watching the Spanish film "Rec" instead.

Quarantine is the American remake of rec. Despite being a near shot for shot remake, it didn't do anything better than rec.

reply

Jennifer Carpenter's performance was more effective in my opinion. Her hysterics really capture the panic and chaos of the last 20 or so minutes. That's why I suggest Quarantine. I get that REC came first.

Thanks heaps for the suggestions! I will be sure to check them out! :)

Nightlight is pretty similar. Frankly, it's a little too similar.

Grave Encounters is a good one that has a similar atmosphere to this. The sequel is also pretty decent.

Session 9
Devil's Pass
Grave Encounters
Absentia
Oculus
Banshee Chapter
The Taking of Deborah Logan
The Tunnel

Almost all of the movies u mentioned are favorites of mine.. I friggin love Devil's Pass, because I am very intrigued by the real Dyatlov's Pass incident.. The only one I felt did not live up to the cult hype was Session 9.. I actually found that movie to be somewhat boring..

The original Found footage film is Cannibal Holocaust. It's literally about found footage.

Try a film called "The Borderlands" - though it seems to be called "Final Prayer" now.

"A team of Vatican investigators descends upon a church in a remote area to demystify the unusual happenings, but what they discover is more disturbing than they had first imagined."
