This is a bad sign for the western world.

GO...BARBIE...GO!

reply

song is way better than the movie

reply

Well, 80 millions ow is quite good for a talky, 3hr long R-rated historical biopic, I think.

reply

Yeah, I'm surprised at how well it has done, actually. Although people were kind of starved for good movies after the past 3 years.

reply

I can see the headlines now: “Oppenheimer Bombs”

reply

Oppenheimer is counterprogramming to Barbie....for a different audience.

reply

The ratio of dumb to smart people is around 4:1. Shouldn't the Barbie box office numbers be higher?

reply

You obviously haven't seen it.

reply

I have seen Oppenheimer. I will not watch an overlong ad for girlie toys. Or let's say I will not pay to see it.

reply

I will watch both. Oppenheimer because it is interesting to me, and Barbie because word is that they did a great job with it.

reply

Oppenheimer will be forgotten like every other stupid biopic. How often do people watch the Malcom X movie or Gandhi or the George Bush movie?

People hype these things up because important subjects must be important films. But it's pretty often the case what stands the test of time isn't dark gritty history lessons. But visually innovative experiences.

Tron, Scott Pilgrim, Hausu,, Speed Racer. People remember these because they offered a wholly unique experience and they all pretty much became cult classics over night.
Barbie will probably be the same. It's set design and color alone will be remembered for decades.

"Oppenheimer will be forgotten like every other stupid biopic. How often do people watch the Malcom X movie or Gandhi or the George Bush movie? "

Depends on the biopic. I've watched several times The Imitation Game and I have Theory of everything on blu-ray. Not to mention Scorsese's The Aviator, which is one of his better movies. Edit: Oh yes, I totally forgot Oliver Stone's The Doors, which I have on 4K UHD.

"Tron, Scott Pilgrim, Hausu,, Speed Racer. People remember these because they offered a wholly unique experience and they all pretty much became cult classics over night. "

Besides Tron, I've not even heard about those. And don't remember when I last saw Tron, probably just once. Have you considered the real possibility that your taste in movies is shit?

reply

Hausu had a criterion release and is widely regarded as one of the defining films of Japanese cinema

reply

A film doesn't even have to be good to ensure it's better remembered. It just has to be unique.

Worst piece of crap ever Monkey Bone is a visual masterpiece. It's fun to watch and see the work that went into everything.

Pearl Harbor came out that same year. Most people will probably say "yea that's an important patriotic movie and then they'll scroll to Monkey Bone and watch that instead.

The same will probably happen here.

reply

Sorry, I really can not imagine someone who wants to see this Barbie crap more than once. I had the chance to watch the first 30mins in between. Couldn't stand anymore. The sets are cheap, the jokes are flat, the message is dumb. The color? Yeah, pink. And???

reply

The entire film is about abolishing gender roles. Each side is portrayed ridiculously stupid and proven that whichever side gets power whether it's the Ken's or the Barbies it amounts to the same thing.

Barbie ultimately learns not to place her trust in Feminity and Ken learns not to define himself by the women around him. They essentially both abandon gender identity at the end.

That's an incredible message.

reply

A little ambitious, isn't it? The average viewer has an attention span of what? 30 minutes? So most of the audience will get no message but "feminism rules" (SHE was the protagonist!) or "woke" (HE was suppressed!).
But hey, let's see how society changes thanks to Barbie...

reply

Yea most people are dumbasses who probably think the greatest cinematic achievement of all time is Dark Knight or Die Hard. There are actually people who stop and think about the media they consume. Shocking I know. There not all brainless idiots.

The masses don't know Tarkovsky or Goddard or Pasolini. The masses don't determine how films are remembered tho. Because the smart people at the time recognized these films would outlive there contemporaries making lazy crowd pleasers.

I'm not saying this is on the same level but it's probably going to be an incredibly important movie.

reply

I wouldn't let those guys you mentioned nowhere near a big budget production.

reply

Pasolini did the trilogy of life. Regarded as one of the most ambitious works of cinema ever created.

And everyone can enjoy them. Jesus. Learn something about art.

reply

You say this as if it’s a surprise 🤷‍♂️

reply

Barbie is a PG-13 movie with mixed reviews and will likely be very front loaded.

Oppenheimer will likely play in theaters much longer and is likely going to be Oscar Bait.

reply

Not very mixed...90% on RT and 80% on Metacritic (a compilation site). So you're predicting it will slip to 2nd place as soon as next weekend?

reply

Plenty of reviews say Barbie is a feminist Shitshow. If I had a daughter I wouldn't let her watch that man hating trash.

reply

So much hate. It's good you don't have a daughter.

reply

It sounds like the hate is in the movie. Greta hates men and makes it clear with the film.

reply

Even with Barbie being front loaded, Oppenheimer won't have the legs to match the same box office gross.

reply

Not surprisingly. Every girl in America played with Barbie dolls. Most people under 70 have no idea who Oppenheimer was.

reply

Ah, but do they know who Chris Nolan is?

reply

Nolan is certainly one of those directors whose name can sell a film.

reply

I believe the only film of his that I haven't seen is his debut, Following. Every other film I've seen and I think I saw all of them in the theater. (It's possible I caught Insomnia on VHS. I can't remember.)

Even having felt pretty iffy about Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet, I won't miss one of his movies.

I'll also point out that he's one of the few directors with the power to get a three hour film released into theaters today.
