rape scene... gone too far?

I know that you have to go far in scenes to create an impact. I love shocking scenes & shocking movies, but...

I was just wandering if the scene went too far by showing a 13 y/o girl (or 15y/o girl in real life) in her underwear in a sexual situation?

There could have been other ways the scene was shot, without making her appear like that on-screen.

First, I have to think what kind of parents would let their daughter appear like that.

Then, I believe that this scene will be a delight to pedophiles.

Finally, I know that another way to create impact is that the pedophile isn't apprehended at the end, but that just sends a WRONG WRONG message to pedophiles watching this movie... he didn't get caught and many other pedophile crimes that the FBI was on didn't get solved....

I liked the movie and find it a little shocking, just thing it goes 'too easy' on pedophiles!

I don't fault the director for including that scene though I was also hoping that her rape would take place off screen. To have glossed over it would be kind of a cop out. I think that Schwimmer was trying to point out that:

a) To normal people the seduction of a 13 year old girl is abhorrent and disgusting.

b) Unfortunately we cannot prevent these thing from happening entirely but what we CAN do is act in a way that does not re-victimize girls like Annie.

The scene didn't go too far.

In reality for most people that scene wasn't anything close to being a sexual situation.

Also, it's similar to what Law & Order SVU has shown in numerous episodes. Yes, there could have been other ways the scene could have been shot, yet it was great that they didn't. Did it cross the line maybe? Was it the right choice? Absolutely.

Your first point is just plain ignorant. So you honestly believe that the way someone dresses is okay for them to be raped? Secondly the only thing she received was a dress, which truly wasn't an issue either.

Second point is good for a laugh. Delightful for pedophiles? Another truly ignorant comment.

Also, I believe you're taking the movie way too seriously.

i agree with u pacodurazo...

I was even in more shock when she appeared half naked on screen... surely they have laws against minors (under 17) appearing in such a way?? the actress is very, very brave to bare her soul like that... but from a sociological perspective... so wrong. God knows how such a scene got MPAA approval???

I think there's no question that the director showed a lot of restraint in that particular scene...

I think it was necessary, and your worries about pleasing pedophiles are misplaced because it IS the realism of the film that will hopefully hit home to audiences so that they might better protect their children against such predators...

I think the scene was done perfectly.

paco--I think the scene was perfect. It had the right amount of creepiness and awkwardness to it. If Annie showed up in a robe, or under the sheets, then you wouldn't get a sense of how vulnerable she really felt, now would you? Schwimmer did an excellent job. Esp. when 'Charlie' rolled on top of her, you could see how much older and heavier he was, and how disgusting it all was. And as a final touch, Schwimmer focuses on a corner of the wallpaper, a realistic touch that shows what she is looking at while getting raped. The scene didn't go too far--there was nothing gratuitious in the scene whatsoever. Now if they showed him really getting it on with her and tongue-kissing her, yes. If they showed nudity, probably yes that's gratuitous. I thought the scene was just perfect--this seedy motel room and the crime about to be committed and this awkward girl trying out the "underwear" her creepy "friend" gave to her to wear as an excuse to get her into something skimpy. And the fact that a CAMERA was on--man, that really revealed what sort of person "Charlie" was!

it didnt go too far, u see girls that age in bikinis at the beach in real life, actually acting slutty, in this case all u saw was one girl looking really scared, so the OP should lighten up, pedophiles probably felt delighted by even seen her in clothes, so there's no way to stop what goes through their minds, just enjoy the story told in the film.

I think she was nervous and scared during the rape scene.
