I speculate it is a Hollywood version of the, 'damsel-in-distress'. Historically-speaking, if you're from one of the three, monotheistic faiths, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, religion history records possession of seemingly random people, male and female. Interestingly, the possessed, while either male or female, have tended toward the young adult to middle-aged adult range. Historical accounts of possessed children or elderly people are very, very scarce. It makes sense. Young children are innocent. Elderly people avoid doing those kind of 'things' that get them possessed. It's the able-bodied adults with the fully-developed intelligence and physical capabilities to get involved in personal activities that can bring on demonic possession.
P.S. While it is true that mental illness had long been mistaken for demonic
possession, a possessed person - over time - will become mentally ill as
well. That is troublesome, especially with the advance of medical -cal
science in the 20th and 21st centuries. Mental illness might be
accurately diagnosed while overlooking the demonic possession.
P.S. I hold out expectation that perhaps with technological advancement, we
modern humans might actually be able to 'detect' the real existence of
the so-called, 'angels' and 'fallen angels'. I can't perceive radio
waves and x-rays with my five senses, but I know both exist, as
since my radio blurts out music and humans talking when I turn it on.
We might finally be able to prove these non-carbon-based, non-corporeal
creatures are indigenous to this planet and exist along the non-visible
light spectrum as some, still as yet unknown cohesive energy matrix that
supports sentient thought, desire, and personality.
