Not as great as Dune (1984)

Can't beat the otherworldly look of a Lynch flick.

reply

Far better than the 1984 version in my opinion. No weirding module nonsense.

reply

I'll have to disagree, while I don't think it's "far better" like a previous poster said, all around, it is better.

The 1984 film is like a cartoon version of the story. The updated movie(s) are a more serious approach.

However, you posted this on the part 2 board, which hasn't been released yet. Did you mean to post this on the part 1 board? As of now, it might be too early to say how much better this is going to be since the 2nd film hasn't been released yet. So, we'll see what happens. But judging by part 1, it will most likely carry on to greater heights than the Lynch film.

It is not a discussion

reply

No, it's a movie!

The music, the intro, the actors - yes, 1984 version was superior. As Lynch says, though, the narrative was disjointed due to budget constraints and producer meddling - so the 1984 version could have been much better in that regard.

reply

That's the stunning thing about it. Budget restrictions held it back but Lynch's style still came through and made it as fantastical as the book itself.

reply

But the second half was completely rushed.

I personally think both films have their merits, but the biggest reason why I put Villeneuve's version ahead of Lynch's, is that Villeneuve got to put his full unadulterated vision onscreen, whilst Lynch's film, as fascinating and visually splendid as it is, is filled with evident compromises.

reply

Villeneuve is a style hack. His blade runner 2049 was soulless.

reply

Lynch keeps saying that his vision did not come through, so I'm not sure that's an accurate statement.

reply

Lynch is no authority on how he is perceived. You think hit writers knew beforehand? They'd be billionaires...

reply

Lynch is an authority on his vision - not on people's perception of it.

reply

Yet the end result is all that matters.

reply

Anyone remember the spoof thread on the old IMDb board about how David Lynch supposedly freaked out anytime anyone mentioned Dune?

reply

The jury is still out on new Dune until we get the second part, but the 1984 version certainly has more character. The sets, costumes, music and most of actors are perfect.

The second half was rushed and it stumbled with most of the action bits; weirding modules, blocky shields, Harkonnens and Sardaukars in mylar hazmat suits, Atreides soldiers holding rocketless RPG-7 as their main weapon...
