How could a walker possible sneak up on someone and bite them like they do ?

These walkers start growling and hissing when the see something when they are 20 feet away, and then they stumble and shuffle their feet, not to mention they must smell horrible at this point, how is it they get close enough to out of nowhere chomp on someone?

Its a old Hollywood horror movie jump scare they have been using for decades, it makes no sense, it's all done to scare you.

You can smell a dead animal in the woods from miles away. Zombies couldn't sneak up on anybody.
