Why didn't Merle cut the handcuff chain instead of his wrist?

Just started binging this show on Netflix. In one of the first few episodes, when Merle was handcuffed to the pipe on the roof, why didn't he just use the saw to cut through the very thin chain holding the handcuffs together, rather than cutting through his (much thicker) arm?

reply

Easier to cut through flesh and bone than hardened steel? Don't remember clearly but I think he tried that first.

reply

And the saw was dull

reply

I hear ya. It would take a lot for one to decide to go through their hand first over the thin chains of the handcuffs, I guess he had to make a decision quick with the walkers apparently figuring out how to climb stairs...

reply

He tried but was breaking the saw.

reply

What we learned from "Mad Max" (and "Saw") is that the chain is hardened and the saw won't cut through.

reply

yes, perhaps if he had more time , the metal could have been broken, but the walkers were descending upon him up on the roof.

reply

This ^^^

reply

Actually, all he needed to do was cut off a thumb.

It isn't a fun thing to do, but it is a much better plan than cutting off the whole hand.

reply

Your are right. That would have certainly worked. Good thinking.

reply

They do that alot to cops. Cop gets stabbed and reacts. Maybe his first reaction was to grab his gun and shot the stabber in the head. Months later he's in a room with one hundred experts telling him all the other things he could've thought of after they analyzed the situation for months. Meryl had walkers busting through the door any second and was in a panic. Plus, writers either didn't think of it or it was the whole hand in the comic. Maybe on purpose so he could get that bad ass spike end.

reply

Hah! I met Michael Rooker at horror convention. He is as totally bad-ass as he portrays. TWD should have never killed him.

reply

He kissed my wife!

reply

Me too!!

reply

They killed him way too early in the game, but at least, he went out in style.

reply

I could see the governor telling him that and then he has a fit saying why didn't I think of that, F!!!!

reply

He did not think he had the time, I would suppose.

reply

It takes less time to take off a thumb than a wrist. Perhaps the character did not understand that he could do it that way.

reply

True that, good thinking. Don't tell Merle though, it will make him feel even worse!

Seriously, I did not think of that. Probably less bleeding and danger of death as well.

reply

That might've worked! Yeah, pointing it out to Merle - probably not a good idea. But handcuffs and their chains are designed to be very difficult to cut through with your basic hacksaw. And he had a limited time to act before one of the walkers managed to wriggle through.

reply

Yeah, cuffs are made from hardened steel ...
but hacksaws are also not really efficient at cutting things
other than metal. Have you ever tried to cut wood with a
hacksaw? It doesn't work well. I am not sure about bone
or meat, but I think I would have at least tried the hacksaw
on the cuffs first.

reply

Because writers think it adds more drama.
