I was hoping to have some childhood nostalgia and see a movie about one of my favorite types of toys, and yet it turned out to be just another disgusting, toxic, age inappropriate wokefest.
Midnight's Edge provided some commentary on it. Thankfully, they brought in one of their fellow female youtubers, and she too was not happy with the movie, despite being the target demographic. They said somewhere in the video that it was released earlier in Korea, and the numbers are a preview of what's going to happen to this film over here in the West: strong numbers on opening day, and then a severe drop-off in just a day or two after opening day. It's gonna be ugly.
I was honestly horrified with what they said about the film. Never thought I'd see Toxic Woke Barbie rear her ugly head. I mean, one reason women of all ages love her is because she can be whoever you want her to be, and unfortunately that magic door swings both ways. Just ask that bitch, Greta Gerwig. I honestly would ban her from making any more movies if I was in charge at Hollyweird. She is an audience-killer.
Well, it would mean that your opinion is an informed one that you arrived at through using your own critical thinking skills, wouldn't it? Y'know, instead of essentially being told what to think by someone else, which I think you'd agree isn't intellectually honest or healthy.
I don't think making decision based on opinions /critique is the same as "being told what to think by someone else", especially when the decision is on how to spend your time and money..
You're right. Making a decision not to see a film based on other people's opinions is a different thing to being told what to think. People do that all the time. 'This doesn't sound like my cup of tea then.' That's reasonable.
What's less reasonable is to take a strongly politicised stance against a film -- 'this is woke', 'this is a QAnon film' -- without having formed your own opinion of it through actually having watched it. That's allowing yourself to be told what to think.
There are already samples of the questionable scenes you can watch for free. Nope, I don't need to invest a single dime in this crap.
Although Margot looks really cute...
No way in hell am I subjecting myself to this slime. I have my mental well-being to consider, and I'm old enough to know which movies are going to piss me off.
Sure they just had to dupe people into seeing it. Even if this movie makes 3 billion dollars. How Dose that make it good. Dose that make it better than Citizen Kane, 12 Angry Men, and Schindler's List. This movie already got a 7.5 on IMDB and only going go down from here. This is Last Jedi all over again. People calling it a masterpiece based on How much it made.
this goes against my tidiness about written text, but i think from now on, when i reply to you, i will balance out your stupid use of all caps with this use of all lower-case. how d'you like them apples, kowalski?
You know when I first read about this movie and its themes I said to myself "Kowailski is gonna be taking up permanent residence on the Barbie MovieChat page".
Checked your account's replies and yep 6 times already.
I bet when you were watching it you were planning your assault as well.
I TOTALLY WAS...I WAS FORCED TO WATCH THE FILM SOONER THAN I PLANNED ON...AS IT'S THEMES HAVE BECOME SUCH A CAN OF WORMS AROUND HERE LATELY...I ALMOST ALWAYS WAIT FOR MOVIES TO HIT PHYSICAL MEDIA...OR AT THE VERY LEAST STREAMING🤢...SO YEAH...I WAS PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE MOVIE AND NOTING MOMENTS AND TOPICS THAT HAVE BEEN MENTIONED HERE.
I honestly would ban her from making any more movies if I was in charge at Hollyweird. She is an audience-killer.
Good thing you're not in charge!
"Over the weekend, moviegoers turned out in force for Greta Gerwig’s neon-coated fantasy comedy “Barbie,” which smashed expectations with $155 million to land the biggest debut of the year."
It's not an exact science. What I think separates this stupid af movie is its association with nostalgia and a ubiquitous toy that is apparently now being 'reclaimed', as it was formally an object that fostered negative body image in young girls and other issues.
The turning of games and old TV shows into major motion pictures doesn't seem to be slowing down. Hollywood loves nostalgia and sequels and reboots because they are afraid of failure and thus avoid untested new ideas.
At least Barbie has Margot Robbie smiling prettily throughout, which isn't all bad

The writing is on the wall! This Barbie movie sure didn’t bump up my Mattel stock. I dread the figures. It probably would have done better if they had made a Black Barbie…followed by a White dude playing MLK. History be damned!
I'll tell you something. If I was coming up with a Barbie fantasy world, it would have been nothing like that misandrist wet dream they made in the film. My Kens would have been treated better, had homes, not everyone would have to be named "Barbie" or "Ken," they could reproduce and have families with children (albeit they'd resemble Kelly's, Skippers, and their male counterparts, and the births would be akin to what you see in Sims 2; first you see no baby, now you do!), and if something truly awful happened to a Barbie's real-life counterpart, she could always have a place to go to get support from the community. I wouldn't be against having a diverse community either, though to be fair, due to their popularity in the real world, you'd still find a lot of blond, blue-eyed barbies and kens around as the majority.
My big question is WHY? Don’t get me wrong because as a Mattel stock holder I hope I see a significant bump. Mattel stopped giving dividends in 2012. Back to my query. WHY? Has the Dark Side won over the ignorant? Have brains finally turned to mush due to reprogramming?
To be fair, I think people are going to forget about it soon after it comes out on digital. They made a big deal about "The Force Awakens" too, and yet now nobody wants to say a word about it unless it's to complain. It brought in a lot of money to Lucasfilm...for a brief time. Whatever money WB gets from Barbie is going to be spent very quickly to pay off studio debts and to pay off investors. Do you really think they'll have a lot left over in the end? Lucasfilm thought the same way about their trilogy...and yet its "legacy" fizzled out very quickly in just a few years. I suspect Barbie will have a similar thing happen, but in the end, it will be forgotten just as quickly and on a smaller scale.
Plus, there are plenty of family-friendly barbie movies people can have their kids watch instead.
”As of July 23, 2023 , Barbie has grossed $155 million in the United States and Canada, and $182 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $337 million, and was a "record-breaking" box office success, greatly exceeding expectations, and marking the highest grossing weekend for a film directed by a woman.
LOL! What I recall when my 2 girls and their friends played with their Barbies it always seemed the Barbies were left naked. I chalked it up to they got tired of dressing & undressing Barbie. 🤣
I hated seeing my dolls naked. I felt like I was neglecting and embarrassing them :( They may be lifeless lumps of plastic, but when you have a strong imagination and love your toys, you want to do nice things for them, even if that sounds silly to some people.
Not silly at all. Barbie was a comfort item for kids. Barbie became a sentient being for mostly little gals. My daughter’s Mrs. Beasley became Grandmother (my mom) when I had scolded her. She still has her with one arm just barely hanging on which was the arm my daughter grabbed to hold onto. Minus the glasses of course.
Call me weird, but I actually was sad I didn't have more Kens. I only had an old vintage one inherited from my older cousin, a dark-haired one that went missing for some reason, (Kens made after the 90s were handsomer than the 70s ones anyway), and I also had a Ken doll of the prince from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" who came with a Beast costume and was in a box with my Belle doll, and he was the one who got to play the "prince" in all my fairy-tales. Sadly, ballroom scenes for Cinderella weren't as fun because I didn't have enough Kens for the other dolls to dance with :( And I never dressed them in pink or the silly fashions you see the Kens wearing in the movie. They wore proper men's clothes.
Her amount is just over $38,000.00 in U.S. dollars. I think her math is wrong. There’s no way she bought 18,500 Barbies for just $38,000 unless many were gifts.
I cannot fathom having 18,500 of anything when it’s a collection of things. The rare first Barbie is probably worth more than all the others put together. The one in the black & white striped swim suit. They lost their value as soon as she removed them from their boxes. It’s the same as buying a new vehicle and driving it off the lot.
She also had to have paid more than she stated unless she purchased most second hand. Ebay would be a guess. When they plant her they should throw all of them in with her. I would have nightmares if I had that many dolls around me!
Here ya go. The young Kirsten Dunst before the wet shirt she had on when kissing the upside down Spiderman.
I think I might have seen this video, in addition to others. Despite several of my favorite channels having mostly male hosts and friends, I feel the same way they're feeling about the way the Kens in the film were being treated. I honestly have never seen Ken and his friends treated so badly in Barbie lore, whether it be books or cartoons. He was always treated like a real person, Barbie's love interest, sometimes her husband, her best male friend, her confidant, and her soulmate.
It seems some of the subliminal messages in this new film are, "Women should treat men like shit because they're worthless, and getting pregnant is disgusting. People shouldn't fall in love or breed, because all it does is lead to misery. Being perpetually young and partying all the time is the only way to be happy and to live."
And…the dead shall speak. Those who have dead souls. They are akin to vampires when the truth hits them in their vicious fangs. All they can do is hiss and spew lies. They will never be free because the truth sets you free. The following describes the left perfectly:
”And perhaps no group is more invested in that than the gaggle of pearl-clutching conservatives who see it as a parable of toxic, anti-man feminism.”
For some reason I thought the phrase “pearl-clutching” was equated with male genitalia.
” For the New York Post, Piers Morgan declared: “If I made a movie that treated women the way Barbie treats men, feminists would want me executed.”
But, what he said goes right along with your opinion about this movie.
Some times I have to gulp, grit my teeth, etc. when a truthful statement is made by the left. I’m not referring to Piers Morgan, but to the left as was stated in the Slade article. It’s only shallow minds who won’t admit the factual truth.
This movie continued with the misandry dogma. The left needs to accept this movie for what it conveyed…men need to be put on the back burner.
Barbie should have started singing “I am woman; hear me roar”
