Not better than The Social Network.
I think Social Network should have won best picture. Kings Speech was o.k.
shareI think Social Network should have won best picture. Kings Speech was o.k.
shareForgot to add Inception, which could have won as well.
shareTotally agree! The Social Network was the best film of 2010. In fact, most other nominees were better than The King's Speech. Toy Story 3, The Fighter, Black Swan, and True Grit were all a lot better than The King's Speech.
shareI also agree. I watched this for the first time because it was on tv the other night & i thought if its won Oscars it must be worth a watch. I found it extremely boring & i usually like biography type movies and am by no means someone who prefers actions over drama or anything. This was poorly paced & overly long, when we know whats going to happen in the end of a story, the build up has to be made a bit more interesting than in this film.
I also did not find Colin Firths performance particularly good, he seems to me to be one of those actors that plays an 'Englishman type' not that much different to himself, like fellow English man Hugh Grant. When i look at photos of King George VI i see he looks absolutely nothing like him, its like the makeup dept didn't even try. Even if a role is acted brilliantly i think there needs to be some physical resemblance between the actor & a real life person for it to really work. (or they need to apply heavy makeup). So in this way it seems Firth was miscast, someone more appropriate in that regard would be Jude Law. I didnt feel any warmth or sympathy towards this character either, and for some reason Helena Bonham Carter just annoyed me, although at least i could see some resemblance between her & the Queen Mother.
Anyway, by far one of the most over rated Oscar winners i can remember!
It was way better than Social Network, in many ways.
shareI actually really liked The Social Network, great movie.
But The Kings Speech is on a whole other level, this movie deeply moved me, the relationship between the King and his speech therapist is just beautiful to behold. An easy 10/10 movie for me.

The King's Speech is one of my favorite movies of all time. A truly beautiful and moving film and all the performances are excellent. Most of the people in the movie are so layered, complicated and morally good. Colin Firth, as Bertie and then King George VI, takes us on an emotional roller coaster of a ride that has us so unbearably anxious for him, sympathetic for him, full of empathy for him and ultimately cheering for him in his personal triumph at the end of the movie. We like him and connect on some level to him. The Social Network may be a very good film, but I didn't care about the people the actors are portraying, didn't really like them. I have watched The King's Speech several times because I love the characters in the film. I love the way the movie makes me feel. I think that is the hallmark of a great film.

I can neither agree nor disagree with you if you don't give solid reasons why you believe this. Having seen all 3 movies,I'll say each was good in its own way but the king 's speech,to me,is the best "drama" of the lot.

I don't know about the social network as I haven't seen it but for me the kings speech is the movie which deserves oscar and i am glad it won.Though a lot of movie release during 2010 were good but this movie was good compared to the others.I usually watch movies in two parts means I watch half of the movie on 1 day and rest in next day but while i watched this movie,my heart and mind urged me to complete this movie on same day as the acting, direction and story plus screenplay was splendid and spellbinding. So i don't care what others think about this movie but for me it is worthy of oscar.
shareWhile I liked Social Network, I didn't feel compelled to rewatch. I watched Kings Speech 5 times last count. This is not because I "hated" one movie and "loved" the other. It's simply because I can relate more personally to the Kings Speech. That's the main reason why a majority of people like it.
shareCompletely agree with you on this. I've just rewatched the King's Speech for the 3rd or 4th time. And it's just stunning to watch and very entertaining.
Social Network was....eh.....ok. I saw it once and haven't wanted to go back and see any amazing performance that stuck out. I don't think about that movie and say "Oh man, that one seen was fantastic!"
The King's Speech won the Oscar because it is based on actual events and culminates wth one of the most important speeches in British history at one of the most pivotal times in history.
And.....Social Network is about......Facebook's beginnings. Somehow the two don't seem equal at all :-)

shareAlmost anything would have been better than "The Social Network". They could have re-released "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars" and it would have been better than "The Social Network".
