They should have used James Gandolfini for the main role

I haven't seen the movie yet and I have nothing against Michael Shannon but if I were to cast an actor to portray Richard Kuklinski, I would have chosen James Gandolfini for the role. He looks like him and we all know he can be a bad ass in his movies.

Any thoughts?

I've been thinking the exact same thing since I watched the interviews with Kuklinski. Gandolfini is born for this role. Surely he must have been asked and turned it down.

reply

Michael Shannon was perfect for the role

I really need to see this movie... then, I can elaborate on my original post. Stay tuned...

Sadly this wonderful actor passed away today (June 19th 2013) at the age of 51 of a massive heart attack.

He will be greatly missed.

James Gandolfini (September 18, 1961 – June 19, 2013)

reply

Doesn't matter now, James is dead.

reply

James Gandolfini Doesn't have the dead look in his eyes. If you ever saw the interviews of the real Iceman, He is almost devoid of any expression. Michael Shannon has the same look, even in other movies.

reply

Kuklinski is polish with light hair and light eyes, granted they look alike in silhouette but not in character
why cast an italian when Kuklinski was so famous for being non-italian, thats why he got so many contracts cuz he had no affiliation and was a free agent, so to speak.

reply

The Iceman is NÒT polish!
Even though Richard Kuklinski's character is called "Polack" throughout the film, his mother, Anna McNally, was the daughter of Irish immigrants from Dublin.

reply

And his father was...Polish.

I'm trying to keep myself composed not yelling bloody idiots to each and everyone of you.

It's about portraying the character that's important. And Michael Shannon did an excellent job.

reply

Indeed, in my opinion Michael Shannon was really impressive in this film.

With his beard like that he would've been a very convincing older Kuklinski, however he wouldn't have been much good for a younger Richard.

I thought the film was a big let down, especially if you've read Philip Carlo's book.
