Oscars: Are You *Bleep* Kidding Me?

Are They Seriously *beep* Us? This Was The Best Animated Movie of the Year, Now HTTYD2 is gonna win....

Nicobade are you kidding? its almost always pixar

remember the old "brave fiasco" when one of the best animated movies of the decade(wreck it ralph) lost to an average clichéd movie.

reply

The Academy clearly ignored The Lego Movie's "you should follow the crowd and go along with others' opinions because they're popular" message.

reply

In my opinion, How to Train Your Dragon 2 was better than Big Hero 6 and barely better than Lego Movie(10/10-9.9/10 difference while BH6 is an 8/10). Remember this category was only made in 2001. Disney only has won once(Frozen in 2014 which was very deserving). Pixar has won multiple times with Finding Nemo(2003), Incredibles(2004), Ratatouille(2007), Wall-E(2008), Up(2009), Toy Story 3(2010), and Brave(2012). Pixar wasn't acquired by Disney till 2006 and Ratatouille and Wall-E were most likely almost finished.

I have not seen HTTYD2 yet, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. But the trailer (admittedly a poor judge of a movie) made it look like cookie-cutter sentimental drivel.

reply

There was nothing cookie cutter about it.

reply

You have GOT to be kidding me! The whole movie centers around the mysterious "Dragon Rider" who -- cookie-cutter alert, turns out to be his MOTHER. /cookie-cutter alert

Maybe after you've graduated from Gryffindor, you may have the sophistication to understand cookie-cutter plots.

reply

You wouldn't know that of the trailers didn't give it away if you have yet to see the movie. I don't recall other other movies have some mysterious figure end up being a parent? I meant more of the plot and what transpires in the movie.

You mean every *beep* movie ?

Trust no one.

cookie-cutter sentimental drivel.

Terribly accurate

I think The Lego Movie will get the BAFTA as a consolation prize and Big Hero 6 will get the Oscar. It's not a category dominated by Disney, though - Pixar still have the most awards. Disney have won it once.

reply

I was actually expecting it to WIN despite the Golden Globe snub, so this is quite surprising to me. It deserved at least a nod.

reply

What Golden Globe snub? It was nominated and it lost. By no stretch of the imagination is that a "snub".

reply

It is ridiculous. No other animated movie of 2014 compares to the depth and ingenuity of The Lego Movie.
Once again, the Oscars prove themselves to be unjust.

reply

You obviously haven't seen Princess Kaguya.

reply

Agreed. What a great story and film. Not since Persepolis have I been in awe of an animated movie. Though Watership Down is still my all time favorite. The end gets me every time.

reply

If you'd bothered to see my Ratings list, you'd have found out that I had already watched Princess Kaguya and rated it a 10/10. But because I knew that it was a 2013 film and because I hadn't yet learned that it was nominated, I simply didn't make any comment about it.
Hence, in my book, the best animated movie of 2014 is The Lego Movie and the best animated movie of 2013 is The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

reply

Fair enough.

reply

This movie was inherently male dominated and they were invested because they grew up with it. They simply lost out of the other half that didn't care for the Lego franchise. Apparently the rest of the world didn't care too much either.

While, BH6 is easily enjoyed by both male and female, so is How To Train Your Dragon 2, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, Song of The Sea and Boxtrolls.

Lego didn't make a big impact like Frozen and couldn't break walls of demographics. Just think about it, Frozen was aimed at the female demographic yet it was done well enough to get everyone interested. Lego was not a contender it was almost completely co-dependent on males. Let it go.

reply

Are you kidding? You don't have to have grown with legos to love the movie.
I'm a woman, and love it, as every woman I know. On the other side, I don't think many men likes Frozen. (And I bet the mayority of the Oscar members are men, but I supposse they don't like the imagination and creativity)
I only have seen two of the nominees, Big Hero 6 and HTTYD2.
Big Hero 6 is not bad, but it's not great either. HHTYD2 is terrible. Maybe the others nominees are better, but they aren't going to win.

reply

It's OK for you and your friends to like this and women liking is not out of the question. It's just that more men like it then women overall. Lego is a toy aimed at the male demographic. It only makes sense to see an overwhelming reaction of males vs. females when the nomination results were presented.

Ironically guys were more sensitive about the nomination then the girls were... They may not be able let it go.

reply

Actually if the poll on the Frozen is any indication, there's more men that like Frozen than you'd realize.

And HTTYD2 I'd argue was much better than Lego, which I didn't find all that imaginative and creative. The jokes I found funny were already in the trailer, the rest were predictable, and the twist came too late in the movie to appreciate the rest of it.

If you're happy and you know it, go sit in the corner and think about your life.

reply

On the other side, I don't think many men likes Frozen.

Are you kidding me? I love Frozen! I rarely like musicals - but "Let It Go" dug deep into some old memories and got me like a kid. ;)

Geez, guys I know generally like Frozen, and that says a lot because generally I don't talk that much about movies with my male friends - aaaand one of those movies that I did talk about... was Frozen! I mean the title, not like "covered in ice". That would be silly. ;)

We have emotions too you know. :P

reply

Ah, yes. 2015. Let's throw sexism into everything.

reply

Then by your logic, since the Academy is dominated by males and this movie appealed to mostly males, then it should've been a shoo-in for a nomination.

reply

Just speculation in the beginning.

The nominations were done by people who actually work in the animation industry for that particular category – animation. And the awarded is chosen by those from the Academy.

So in actuality if the "Academy" did vote for the nominations Lego actually would've gotten a better chance at a nod! And yes, the Academy is mostly dominated by males :P

reply

Maybe the live action scene at the end ruined its chances. That is the only reason I can think of on why it was snubbed. Maybe many voters didn't consider it because it was only 97% animated and 3% live action.

reply

This.

If there was a split for best black and white and color cinematography more than likely Schindler's List wouldn't have been nominated for best black and white cinematography.

reply

1) The Lego Movie was not disqualified because of the live action sequences. It wasn't nominated because the nominating panel thought there were five better films in contention.

2) Your hypothetical example is spurious and absurd.

reply

This film deserved a best picture nomination if not the best animated film (which it easily should have won) it is on par with Up and Toy story 3 both of which received best picture nominations. So sad.

reply

It is nowhere near close to the quality of Up or TS3.

If you're happy and you know it, go sit in the corner and think about your life.

reply

It was CGI and not actually animated with LEGOs, plus you drop almost all design points since they're based on something already existing..

reply

the sets in the lego movie where made especially made for the movie by the lego designers who had great attention to detail, so i don't get what you'r saying.
It's hard not to get impressed by the animation, when everything (even smoke, water and lasers) is made out of lego bricks.
