As a guy: this was an average comedy...

...and the last 30 minutes, when all the good jokes have been told and it shifts to pure drama / female friendship, was boring.

This movie is clearly targeted at women, though, so I can’t really complain.

I will say that “Ladybird” is a far better written, acted and directed.

reply

i didn't like it either.
the jokes didn't make me laugh, the feelings stuff made me cringe.
said this in another thread, but i'll say it again.
booksmart clearly wasn't made for me, but ladybird & 8th grade weren't made for me either & i completely loved both of those films.
i went in ready to like booksmart, but i thought it was a pandering, hyper-woke 100 minute bore.

reply

I agree, Ladybird is actually amusing whereas this movie has some really tired/cliched tropes.

reply

Reading people saying “Booksmart” is BETTER than “Ladybird” is gobsmacking

reply

I think both films were massively overrated, and just cause we're in the MeToo era and they are directed by women and about women. They get overrated by critic's who are pushing their SJW stance and other critic's afraid to really say how they feel.

reply

Yup, thought the same thing. For this to have the RT score it does required a lot of critics ignoring the many problems with this movie. It was ok at best.

reply

That's a bunch of BS. They were either good movies or they weren't===and the critics thought both films were good. No one's telling any one to like a film simply because women made it---what a stupid ignorant thing to say. Also, if you haven't seen either film, you can't have an opinion about films you haven't seen. Hell, male filmmakers have made some bad films, and still make them, and they still get to make more films. If you haven't seen either one, just shut up,please.

Another vote for enjoying Ladybird much more

reply

I didn't really like Lady Bird. But I have enjoyed Booksmart, mainly because the 2 leads had good chemistry.
The story obviously wasn't anything very original. It had its good moments.

reply

5/10.
They didn't go that wild, did they? Had a few drinks and got drugged. That's it.
I guess the critics only praised it because of the lezzer character.

reply

Based on what I'm reading, one main character turns into a lesbian at the end? So the hetero-conversion is what nets it praise from SJW critics? Figures.

reply

SHE WAS GAY THE WHOLE MOVIE AND BEFORE...JUST CLOSETED.

reply

According to the movie spoiler synopsis, she had a crush on a guy, and that was one of the main reasons they were going to a specific party.

So where did you get this info that she was closeted the whole movie if she was specifically going out of her way to meet/talk to a guy at a party and even looked up porn so she would know what to do if the time came to get intimate?

reply

I OWN THE BLU RAY..I HAVE WATCHED IT TWICE...THAT "GUY" SHE HAS A CRUSH ON IS A HIPSTER ASIAN CHICK BY THE WAY.

reply

Oh my God you are so annoying with that crap…

reply

It's been a while since I saw it, but I remember thinking it was pretty funny.

reply

I LIKED IT...I DIDN'T LOVE IT...BUT YOU CAN ONLY LOVE SO MANY...A SOLID B/B+ EFFORT.
