That guy was a cop?

Virtually nothing about him was "coplike". Not his demeanor, haircut, attitude, job performance, build, etc. Nothing. It's like the character was supposed to be a garbageman, but they changed it to cop at the last second for NO reason. Oh, and his ACCENT? Really?

Are you trying to say he wasn't enough of a douchebag to play a realistic cop?

Get on the scale! Get off the scale.

It absolutely does. He was a really real Irish cop. That was the joke. Learn your American civil service history. Because of their scrappy nature fighting British oppression and other harsh living conditions, Irish immigrants to the US wound up filling the ranks of police and fire departments in major cities. In fact, those dangerous jobs were too often the only ones that able-bodied Irishmen could get because of the prejudice and cowardice of other established ethnicities.

The Simpsons and many other shows/movies have pointed out this connection for decades. Chief Wiggum is depicted as being from Ireland.

In the dramatic arts, old-timey cops have almost always had an Irish name and accent to the point of stereotype and cliché.

This is truly a known thing to the non-ignorant people of the world who have the ability to make connections between sets of information.
