Why did they make Alfred fat?

Seems like an odd choice.

And why is the Penguin a woman?

reply

Joking you were not, you were being serious! I thought you were joking about Alred being portly and the Penguin being a woman....now I reallly wish you were joking.

reply

I haven't watched this yet, but Alfred was portly when the character was first introduced in the comics (and I believe his surname then was 'Beagle', not 'Pennyworth').

reply

What do you have say about the Penguin being a woman? Was the Penguin character a woman when first introduced in the comics?

reply

I don't know why they've gone down that route for Penguin, other than 'just for the sake of it'.

reply

For the same reason they made Barbara Gordon black and Harley Quinn a chubby Asian lesbian.

reply

Barbara's black in this?

reply

She's black, but oddly enough they kept her red hair.

reply

black with red hair. cultural appropriation

reply

Seems a strange choice.

reply

Harley Quinn is overweight and a lesbian in this version.

Well, got to keep that male gaze averted I guess. Modern audiences and all that. If you mock or criticize you are an incel and all the bad things.

reply

Body positivity and wokeness.

reply

You can't say fat any more. I believe that is perceived as being deliberately hateful body shaming.

I understand the correct, social acceptable term these days is the inoffensive "portly".

reply

Better choice than Penguin being a woman. I guess we should be glad that Alfred isn't a trans male.

reply

I think the creators wanted to make white men weak, bald and fat. Bullock was also a fatass and he wasn't always fat. I liked Alfred in the Gotham show since he was a former special forces soldier who could protect Bruce with guns or martial arts. I believe he is also heroic in the Pennyworth show. Alfred did provide more comic relief in the 30's but he wasn't a fatass.

I contend that the showrunners made Penguin a woman in the first episode in order to tell long-term fans that this show is not for them. This show is for a modern audience so old white dudes can buzz off.
