Russell Crowe's weight

He looked so seedy, overweight and flabby. His folks were in good shape; it's improbable that an educated guy with a trim wife would let himself get so seedy and overweight. I am talking about the beginning of the film when they are living "happy ever after." I know Crowe gained weight for the Whistleblower film but in Gladiator he looked fit. Even in the preprison scenes he looked like Skid Row.

Part of what I love about Russell Crowe is that he looks like a regular Joe. Some of his best roles are him as your average guy who gets into extreme situations. His masculinity is what makes him hot regardless of weight fluctuation.

When back home in Oz, Rusty lives such an "ordinary" life..being a husband and great father, part owner of a football club and is very approachable when out and about. His wife Danielle Spencer is about to win Dancing with the Stars and he brought his boys to the show last week; all three were dressed in suits (even the little guys:)) and he looked just great.
Who cares about his weight anyway when he has 'the' best voice in the profession!

I can hear you saying that I'm just a biased Aussie, but I love film too much to be so. If I hate a performance by anyone at all, I will be the first to say so. Fact remains that he is one of the best modern day actors by a fair way.

PS: The fact that he loves a beer or three doesn't help the waistline when you're approaching 50...lol.

True. And not to mention, your wife is in prison for life and you're trying to raise your kid on your own while working full-time and coming up with an escape plan. My guess is that gym workouts and healthy eating were the last thing on this guy's mind. He was probably eating TV dinners while pouring over his escape route every night.

Bworm76, perfectly said.

I love Crowe, and since I come from a long line of cute but chubby Irish/Scottish potato farmer types physically (hee), I respect any actor who goes to enormous lengths to change themselves from role to role.

So I actually really respect the fact that despite the fact that his body does obviously want him to be a bigger guy, he has made enormous transformations physically for his roles when necessary -- not just Gladiator (which, seriously, people, yes he was in shape for), but also The Insider, A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential, and most especially (and most overlooked) his absolutely staggering transformation in Cinderella Man, where he looked and carried himself like an utterly different person. I was incredibly impressed with the work that must have gone into creating that character for him.

Then we have this movie, which is an underrated little gem. I actually like that he's kind of schlubby and casual and normal here -- he looks like a regular guy who doesn't spend his days punching bad guys or planning prison breaks -- which is what is so great about the film.

But fat or thin roles, I love the guy, and think he's a ridiculously great actor.

Also, just because I passed by this board, I have to give props to Elizabeth Banks here, because she's so known for comedy, yet she absolutely blew me away in this role and never overplayed it, keeping it all very real and quiet. The scene on the highway near the end is terrifyingly beautiful because of her reaction.

Cheers all!

Fat? You're mistaken, it's muscles. He looked too buff to play the part of an ordinary community college teacher. The Next Three Days was shot back to back with Robin Hood. In that one, you can see him bare chest, and there too I thought he looked way too muscular, playing someone from the 13th century, an era that wasn't really famous for its gyms.

Crowe was a little heavy in "L. A. Confidential". He must have lost weight and worked out before making "Gladiator".
I think he looks slimmer in "The Next Three Days" than in "L.A. Confidential". Not bad for his age!

He looked fine for his age and the part that he was playing.

Crowe has never really been in shape. Early in his career he wasn't overweight, but he's always been soft.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings.

reply

He seemed to be in decent shape in 'Virtuosity.'
