It's That Time Again! Ranking the MCU Movies!

I know if I don't do it, someone else will!

Is it even possible to rank 35 films? I have trouble with it, and I bet if I ranked them 10 times I'd come up with 10 slightly different orders each time. Nonetheless, here goes.

The 35 MCU Films to Date, Ranked in Order of How Much I Like Them

1 The Avengers
2 Spider-Man: Homecoming
3 Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4 Thor: Ragnarok
5 Guardians of the Galaxy
6 Avengers: Infinity War
7 Spider-Man: Far From Home
8 Captain America: Civil War
9 Captain Marvel
10 Eternals
11 Spider-Man: No Way Home
12 Iron Man 2
13 Iron Man
14 Ant-Man
15 Deadpool and Wolverine
16 Thor
17 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
18 Avengers: Age of Ultron
19 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
20 Doctor Strange
21 Captain America: The First Avenger
22 The Incredible Hulk
23 Iron Man 3
24 Black Panther
25 Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
26 Avengers: Endgame
27 The Marvels
28 Captain America: Brave New World
29 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
30 Thor: The Dark World
31 Ant-Man and the Wasp
32 Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
33 Black Widow
34 Thor: Love and Thunder
35 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Note: Wakanda Forever is the only MCU film I haven't seen. I watched the other 34 in the theater when they were new, nearly all at their Thursday night preview shows. I tried watching on Disney+ but lost interest 25 minutes or so into the movie. I'll eventually watch it, but for now it's locked into 35th place by default.

What kind of ridiculous list is this? Where do I even start, although Avengers can be #1 followed by Captain America 2 Winter Soldier.

reply

Did I leave some of the Jaws sequels off, or maybe a Fast and Furious film?

reply

It's difficult to rank them all now. I will say that all four Avengers films, the three Steve Rogers Captain America films, the three Guardians of the Galaxy films and the three Spider-Man films would all be in my top 20 so they've done a good job with those.

I don't think Captain America: Brave New World is as bad as a lot of people are making it out to be but it's in the lower half of my ranking along with The Eternals. I also have Shang-Chi and Black Panther in my top 20. I absolutely agree that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is at the bottom. It's a well acted and directed bore-fest and killing off T'Challa is probably one of the worst decisions Marvel Studios have made for this cinematic universe. They absolutely should have waited and recast.

I probably have the first Black Panther film ranked too low. I enjoyed it a lot when I watched it, but when I was trying to create this list I kept nudging it down when comparing it to other films. I think that highlights what makes this so difficult: with very few exceptions, these are all really good movies. The difference between any of the top 28 or so films is scant.

reply

Do Spider-Man 1 2 and 3 and Daredevil not count because they're not MCU movies? Coz technically Tobey is part of the MCU now.

reply

I'm only considering films made by Marvel, as a part of the MCU. I didn't include any of the TV shows, or any films made by others studios.

I don't know where these fit into the above, but here's me trying to rank those films:

1 Spider-Man
2 Spider-Man 2
3 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
4 The Amazing Spider-Man 2
5 The Amazing Spider-Man
6 Daredevil (Ben Affleck film)
7 Spider-Man 3
8 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

I think the top 15 MCU films are all better than the first Raimi Spider-Man, so I guess that would fit in at #16. Meanwhile, I think 4-8 on this list are all worse than Black Widow, so they'd come in at 34th or worse.
