I didn't know what I was getting into when I watched it

I knew it was some type of "summer camp horror/slasher movie". I didn't know it was going to deal with conversion therapy of LGBTQ teens.

Kevin Bacon was creepy from the very start. I knew he was up to something. Just didn't know what. I thought the movie was more interesting from the gay aspect of acceptance than the slashing aspect. The movie would've worked fine without the killings. I'm sympathetic to people struggling to be who they are when the world won't let you. It's sad.

The killer was pretty obvious, only because there was no one else left for it to be.

I see the movie wasn't well-received, but I think it was a good movie.

I've not seen the movie but just wanted to comment on why I think it wasn't well received and that's simple the pronoun thing, it's a massively divisive issue. I think it's a very clever title for a slasher movie though, They "slash" Them. I like it.

reply

You're right. It is a divisive issue, and it was brought up in the movie. I don't really get the whole pronoun thing, but I don't condemn it just because I don't understand it. You are what you are. But a LGBTQ movie of any nature isn't gonna do well no matter the genre.

I think it comes down to people feeling like others are trying to control them and their perceptions. Compelled speech as it were. I don't think most people begrudge others living their life how they want. I think it was Dave Chapelle who said, paraphrasing, "You can live your life how you want but how much is my participation required in your self identity?"

reply

I think that’s a pretty stupid point he was trying to make. Everyone participates with other people’s in their identity all the time. He calls himself Dave Chapelle. If we met and he introduces himself as that and I say “nice to meet you, David” or “nice to meet you, big guy” he’d probably challenge me and say “please, call me Dave”. If I did it routinely, he’d tell me to fuck off.

I thought the lady being called Angie in the end reminded me of Sleepaway Camp.

I agree.

1 hour in and I think 1 person has been killed. This isn't a slasher film. It's a giant bore.

And that's why it got bad reviews.

reply

I love horror and Kevin Bacon but so far I've not heard anything to make me want to watch this.

They finally had some killing the last 30 minutes but it's definitely not worth your time.

Thanks for the heads-up!
