Kinda sucks this hasn't got the 70's grindhouse aesthetic
That was really what made the original trailer so great, it had a ton of atmosphere because of that, this looks like the polished remake of that Grindhouse movie trailer.

shareWell, Eli Roth is no Robert Rodriguez.
shareMaybe it will be an extra on the eventual 4k and bluray release. I think it might have been a studio decision not to do that for the theatrical release. They probably think the audience might not know why the movie has a washed out look or what its referenced to.
shareIt was definitely a commercial decision. Whilst the grainy and scuffed visual aesthetic of the trailer was cool and would appeal to a niche, they've opted for a theatrical release and when you do so you often have to cater to the masses to some degree. Your casual cinema goer would not take well to a poor looking movie.
I wouldn't get my hopes up on different edit ever being released.
Given the Eli Roth loved the concept of the initial trailer so much when Grindhouse was released in 2007. When the 4k or bluray is released I could see him including a "grindhouse Cut" that has a washed out and scratched film look as an extra. He knows there is a fan base out there who would want to see the film that way.
shareWhen it's 15 years after that fake trailer came out, it would be mainly us fans of it that would understand the aesthetic. It would be lots of fun if they did a Grindhouse version for the Blu-ray.
shareI'm sure the movie will still be cut, directed, and edited like a grindhouse film from the 70's. It's way more expensive to shoot a feature film on 16mm nowadays than it used to be.
shareThe special features for the blu-ray being sold in Canada have no mention of an alternative look/cut for the movie.

It's not happening folks.
I was expecting it to be set in the 70s.
