Damon is horrible

I was watching some scenes from the past seasons and am utterly disgusted by the way he treated people. I was in my late teens when the show first came out and at the time I saw him as a bad boy who was also insanely attractive, I overlooked his awful traits. Now I'm shocked at how I let it all slide and fawned over him with my friends as we watched episode after episode.

What exactly is good about Damon? Especially back then, what redeeming qualities did he have? The fact that he was nice to Elena? If a guy hurt and tried to kill my friends, raped one of my best friends, killed my brother, told me that he would "gladly" let my other best friend die so that she may sacrifice herself for me and all of the other shi!tty things, I would want him dead. The series made Elena look like a terrible friend and sister, as well as a fake hypocrite. I am also disgusted that Bonnie is now his "best friend" after the way he treated her and what he did to Caroline. And some Bonnie fans actually want her to be paired with this awful creature?

Has anyone also brought up observations of Damon with his humanity switch on, vs. with it off? It seems like whenever his humanity is off, he is exactly what a vampire is: a cold, bloodthirsty, ruthless killer. When his switch is on, he is still cold, but acts more sarcastic and snarky, but can immediately be pulled back in some moments to realize why he’s wrong – for example, in season one when he turned Isabel and Elena confronts him about a woman he met way back when, and says “her name was Isabel”, Damon’s smirk IMMEDIATELY drops because he realizes that’s Elena’s mother. Suddenly you can see he’s thinking “OH, CRAP!”, because it’s all over his face. I just wonder if there’s moments where he’s not “as” horrible because his humanity switch is off, and he fits more into his true vamp “mold”, in comparison to when his switch is on and he’s just trying to get a reaction/provoke someone/prove a point/sacrifice someone for someone else, etc.

Yep. He's a bad guy. But then, most of the primary characters on here are actually pretty *beep* people when you stop and think about what they've done, what they've ignored, and what they've condoned.

WORDS MEAN THINGS! Also, before you come to bitch about a plot hole, rewatch the show/movie.
