killing of Little Blacky
so why did Cogburn kill that poor "pony" horse Little Blacky at the end? couldn't he just let him leave?
shareso why did Cogburn kill that poor "pony" horse Little Blacky at the end? couldn't he just let him leave?
shareTOTALLY UNNECESSARY. Absolutely horrible to watch.
And not only the heartless putting a bullet through her head at the end, but also during the ride when the horse is already starting to get tired after running for hours and hours in one straight go (and as if letting her rest for 10 minutes or something really would have mattered), yeah, out of gratitude the basterd starts stabbing her with the knife; what a wonderful world.
That horse saved Mattie's life, and he just kills it. Cogburn doesn't even explain to her why he does it, when she screams "NO! Please no!" in agony and sorrow.
Yes; what a great, and respectful way to say THANK YOU, right?!
Is exactly the same like killing the medics in an ambulance when they come and rush like hell to save somebody's life.
*beep* you Coen Brothers and/or the original writers; whatever. They make the movie, and they remake the movie; so they can choose to change things.
And later on when you hear "adult" Mattie monologueing, she doesn't even mention Little Blacky anymore. -
THAT HORSE SAVED HER LIFE; IF SHE HADN'T BEEN THERE MATTIE WOULD HAVE DIED!
I have to say something again, sorry.
After running the horse almost to death it would have been really brutal to let it die on its own. Cogburn gave Little Blackie the coup de grâce to let him die fast rather than suffer a painful death. And yeah, it would have died. Sometimes it's better to save him pain. It was NOT possible to rescue the horse. Cogburn saved Mattie and sacrificed the horse. Mattie as a grown up would have known.
Some people tend to let an animal rather suffer than let it die. That's not really humane, is it? I'm not the one who likes to kill an animal but I don't want to let it suffer either.
I'm working with horses and I'm glad I didn't have to deal with such a situation yet. I had to put down a horse once (not really me but the vet) because of colic and it wasn't easy. But the poor guy had so much pain and there was no other way unfortunately. So I spared him further pain and let him go.
I also find it ridiculous that people, even kids can be mistreated, killed but if it's an animal everybody cries out loud. And then, it's just a film, it's not even real!
It’s just so sad that the variety of the world should be used as a contentious issue.
Exactly! If Rooster was a heartless bastard then he wouldn't have bothered to put it down. Those were precious seconds he really couldn't spare but he took the time out to put it out of it's suffering.
shareWow... I hope you never watch Old Yeller. Yeller saves their lives but Travis guns him down in cold blood! Oh, the humanity!

If they let it rest for 10 minutes, the horse would of still died or given up there and then.
He stabbed it in the buttock region to give it 1. And adrenalin boost to stave off any heart attack and 2. To force it to keep running.
The Ground they were riding along was tough frozen earth which destroys horses tendons and hoofs in a similar sense to Humans running on tarmac and concrete. It kills our Knees.
Blackie Was a pony and not strong enough nor large enough for 2 riders. The only thing that got him that far was the fact he was a tough little horse with a fine amount of attitude. Cogburn even commented on him at the start of the journey.
The horses had all journeyed for a few weeks with limited rest or surplies.
And finally, after traveling at top speed for many hours in such a climate the horses become winded and exhausted resulting in a shut down and eventual death.
Once a horse goes down from exhaustion, they dont stand up again.
I honestly hope you do not go see War horse in either cinema or theatre.
America was not discovered by Americans - shame on them.
He. The horse was a he.
I have no idea what biological gender the horse used in the film was, but Little Blackie was not a mare.
@JimiCobain You call someone else an uneducated fool yet your post shows what a half wit you are. Did you even watch this scene? You must think 5 minutes on screen is in real time. The horse was given out long before he finally collapsed. It was obvious when he had to stick the knife in it.
shareThe real comment here (and often my typical comment): Why do so many people
respond in a negative, extremely rude way?
Others have commented on the ability to die due to exhaustion, but I thought it might have been due to the fact he stabbed it with a knife.
Not sure why he would have done that? If you want a horse to run fast and far, you stab it? Sounds counterproductive.
Can you tell me how uneducated I must be for thinking such a stupid thought?

I believe the point of having 2 horses is to give them turns with the burden. Yes they run at the same pace, but only 1 is carrying 300 lbs on it's back at a time.
Even though they were in a hurry, it makes far more sense to move a little slower and get to your destination then to have a single horse die underneath them.
If I remember correctly, in the book most of the horses from Pepper's gang were shot or ran off. They didn't have time to hunt the strays down, so they took Little Blackie, who dies in the same manner.
The horse youll drag along will slow you down. It wont run with the same high speed for hours. You literally will have to drag it along with you. Even when you tie it onto your saddle itll slow down your horse. Keeping the reins in one hand is a pain in the arse.

Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.
Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!
Maybe instead of a smug post thats wrong try watching the movie and having some humility. Did you miss the repeated shots where the horse was trying to stop and instead of kicking it like usual he started stabbing it multiple times.
And yes humans have been worked to death before. Not sure if serious

^^^ This.

Regarding the accusation that the Coen brothers put the horse's death in the film because it's sensational and gritty -- nonsense. Everyone here has pretty much nailed the literal reason to the horse's death, but there's also a symbolic reason. This story is a myth; a rite of passage for Mattie. It is the story of her maturation into womanhood. Little Blackie, her pony, is the last remnant of her childhood. When the pony dies, her childhood is over. That's why it's so traumatizing for her. It's the cost she had to pay for her journey.
Okay. Now I'm going to do his teeth and cut off his fingers. You might want to leave room.
