Was it unusual to have a black deputy?

I just started watching this and was wondering how common it might've been back then to have a black deputy. I'd guess that it wasn't very common, but I honestly have no idea. I was just curious if things like that were a thing or if it's just modern interjection. I suppose no one really knows since we didn't live in those times, but maybe someone out there knows more than me with historical facts.

It just kind of feels out of place to me, but maybe I'm just ignorant of the actual history. I just started with the first episode and that kind of struck me because I would think in that time that it wouldn't be accepted in those times.

Is this just me misunderstanding history or is this part of the new diversity quota?

I'm really wanting to know the answer, not trying to troll or anything.

Please, honest answers only. This is not a troll topic.

Not surprising, the south was racist not the American west, it was not uncommon for a town to have a negro sheriff

Interesting! Thanks for the reply!

Probably based off of this guy:

Although I'm positive if there were no black sheriffs or marshalls that they still would have used a black guy as one nowadays. It's glaringly obvious that it's all about checking boxes.
