All Style no Substance

The movie barely had a story. godawful. avoid.

reply

Hahaha....another one.

Fury Road is a masterpiece.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

reply

And the substance is one of the reasons i like the movie that much. The subtext is actually quite dense if one pays attention to it. I found the subtle blend between Nordic cosmogonic folklore with postmodern technophilic esoterism in a nihilistic post-Abrahamic setting to be quite intriguing, if not mesmerizing. Miller created a whole macrocosm with its own mythology, belief system, customs and practices and in doing so added a new conceptual layer to this series creating a rich and fascinating universe.

Besides, i loved the feminism dimension to the movie and in that regard the line "Then, who destroyed the world?!" still resonates quite strongly.

One can agree of disagree with the subtext of the movie, but one can't pretend that there wasn't any.

"WITNESS ME!"

If you find lack of substance refreshing then good for you. Different strokes for different folks.

reply

I love all your arguments. There's no substance in your comments, so how would you recognize it on screen?

It's not awful if all you want to see is a crazed chase scene for two hours. Make no mistake, there is NO story here and it's not really a movie. It's a wild action set piece. If that's for you, rent this endeavor. It's well done in that regard. Just don't call it a movie.

reply

so you are deciding now what is defined as movie? interesting, but I guess I'll stick to the more common approach...

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.

reply

If you paid attention, there is a hell of a story. It is all told visually. It is essentially a silent movie. If you cannot grasp that, that is okay.

No f@cking sh`t lady does it sound like I'm ordering a pizza!

reply

the story if there was one is a load of *beep*

check yourself before you wreck yourself BOI!!

reply

Don't know if i like it or hate it, the silent film aspect. That makes me appreciate it more, And I read that was Miller's original idea for it.

There is quite a lot of story.

1 - In Citadel you've got the haves and the have nots
2 - The military who are brainwashed and drugged up think they are working towards Valhalla, they are being used, this creates relevance and empathy for them
3 - The woman are owned as breeders, a lot of people in this society still want that
4 - A strong female lead who outshines the male lead in nearly every way but he does perform well, a good egalitarian balance overall
5 - Totally badass and great cinematography
6 - Guitarist was very cool
7 - Disllusionment, redemption, development of religion, comfort lies, and courage

This movie had quite a lot of substance, more than I expected.
It was emotionally satisfying, and follows through rather well.

It's not perfect, but few movies are and ultimately it's far superior to the original films.

Half right! 😋

That's not a story, those are just a collection of tropes. Usually to tell a story, you need character development and to explore themes.

reply

The story is this: two hardened warriors become redeemed by taking the fight to an evil dictator.

reply

max stopping being selfish and helping those women is not character development?
nuxx realizing the bullshit hes been fed all his life and changing sides to redeem himself is not character development?
furiosa growing some balls and realizing that she needs to fight for a better future and not run away from a bad one is not character development?

maybe if you didnt only consume christopher nolan films you'd notice development that isnt spoonfed to you.

and once again, when people like you bring up the tired old "there's no story" argument (which holds about as much water as the "you didnt understand it" argument with interstellar)

i always tell them this:
young boy and wise old wizard go to rescue a princess then destroy the castle shes been trapped in

THATS LITERALLY THE ENTIRE PLOT OF STAR WARS

one of the biggest classics of all time.

it's a shame that film culture nowadays is so spelled out that people forget that ultimately it's a visual medium and when someone tells a story by visuals rather than dialogue they lose their shit.

reply

Star Wars is about more than that. A young farm boy from nowhere literally saving the galaxy and stopping an evil empire, while learning the wisdom of the force, is pretty triumphant. It draws on mythology and Arthurian legend. Fury Road is just a 3 hour chase scene with a left over plot from Waterworld. I do not care about Max or Furiosa because they have barely any backstory.

At least no one watched the oscars so maybe we have to warn less and less people off this film from now on. Word of mouth remains bad for a reason.

reply

wow three accounts commenting in the same thread? what kind of miserable life do you live megaknocker/wangwang that all you have is coming on imdb to try to trash certain movies by saying the same things over and over and using the same silly strategy of reviving old threads? what a miserable failure you are...

No it just comes out of nowhere for it to be believable. He just becomes Furiosa's bitch for no real reason other than to move the movie along.

And nuxx's "arc" was some of the funniest forced crap I've ever seen.

"If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die historic on the Fury Road!"

"You'll never get another chance"
"At what?"
"Redemption"

Does it get more spoon fed than that? George Miller treated the audience like little kids.

THAT'S LITERALLY THE ENTIRE PLOT OF STAR WARS

It isn't.

That's just something the Fury Road fan boys cling to in order to desperately make it seem like it has more depth than it actually has. There's not a lot of dialogue but when there is it's so forced and literally spelling things out to you at every opportunity with what to think and feel.

That's barfbag typetalk.

reply

Awesome. I needed a barfbag to watch this horrible movie.

Jim, you left “Self-impressed Pompous Asshole” out of your self-description.

1) stories in cinema are superfluous
2) the style was the substance

1) stories in cinema are superfluous

True. Transformers are well endowed with lots of fluff and minimal story, character development, plot twists or any other cinema basics, yet still rakes in BILLIONS like everyone's addicted to it like crack. That's the pinnacle of cinema today, forget art, this is business.

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"

Overrated and terrible

forget art, this is business.

When quote one is 100% correct then it fails as art as well.

reply

I would testify hand to Bible that this movie should be avoided or skipped if you're a true fan of film. There's just nothing of quality beyond some old school crazed car chases.

reply

Agreed

reply

And the style isn't even that good!

reply

I give credit to the style simply because it is post apocalyptic crazy. That's interesting to a point. Then, you need an actual plot to call it a movie and this thing has NONE.

reply

That is still right. Is a movie with no plot or characters to care about really a movie at all?
