IMDBers made me waste my money

I went to go and see it last night with my Mrs. I thought '7 odd stars, that seems good'. Watched the trailer and it looked decent.

In actual fact though, it was a load of rubbish.

Worst back story ever. They just thought of something really quick that would get her into the ward... And she was in there about 2 minutes into the film. Plus, I don't even understand why she went to the ward? Why didn't she go to the police station or anything?

Then, all the girls in the ward are sexy. Apart from the one ugly one. It's like they just wanted to cram some hot girls in the film to make it better.

There's probably more I could go on about but I can't remember so I'll go straight to the ending...

The twist. It's been done.

Shrooms anyone?????

Dude I'm not being funny, but judging from your recent board posts i dont think the ward is your sorta genre as i saw all of your board posts and one of them was about Pokemon the movie lol

I'm so unbelievably fed up of this twist ending. It left me enraged that it used that ending.
Carpented takes a break for 10 years, avoids the hollywood system and then uses the most over used twist ending of the last decade. It's so over used I refuse to call it a twist anymore, it's a clique.

reply

I agree about the ending - it must've taken a zillionth of a nanosecond to come up with that old chestnut.

reply

...about half that time to come up with the rest of the film...

...I refuse to call it a twist anymore, it's a clique.

Apparently the cliche you hung out with in high school were not literati.

reply

You guys do realize that Carpenter didn't write the script, right? I haven't seen the movie yet but I read the script as it was filming and the twist in the end ties the whole dang movie together. Without it, nothing would make sense.

reply

I was going to respond to this very thing, but man, your reply just almost had me in tears. Perfect response!

reply

LMFAO! Well played...

So am I!! Its done so often now, that I just expect it from every horror film I watch.

This also pee-ed me off, because he made a film with an independant company, he had a chance to do something different - unpredictable even - but stuck to a formular. What was the point Mr. C?

reply

Mind you, it's exactly my kind of genre and I completely agree with him...

I normally don't reply to comments but had to having seen yours. My god, did you actually WATCH the film. If you had, the comments you made would not have been necessary at all. Without giving too much away remember who Kristen actually was then you will understand how everything else worked. It's no surprise that you didn't like the film, you didn't understand it!! That's not to say that the plot was so elaborate that it was difficult to comprehend but more that you couldn't have been paying much attention. If you didn't like it and swicthed off, fair enough, but please do not criticise on such a shaky premise.

As a long time Carpenter fan I was very pleased with his return. The Ward is certainly not a the best thing that Carpenter has done but compared to some of the drivel claiming to be horror out there at the moment, at least the film attempted (and mostly succeeded) in creating an atmosphere. Yes, the plot was a tad predictable, but my wife, who is no Carpenter fan, jumped out of her seat several times and on one occasion could even look at one of the killings so I would consider Mr. Carpenter's work fairly well done. I'm always expecting these things to happen so it doesn't surprise me but that does not mean that I do not enjoy it.

Yes I will concede that I saw the ending coming an absolute country mile away but I feel that it is more because I know and love Carpenter's work so well that it felt like a beloved pet, familiar, yet comforting. I actually smiled at the end (a strange occurence you may say) but I did so with the thought "John Carpenter is back".

I respect that everyone has their own opinion and if someone doesn't like the film, that's ok, it's their choice. However I cannot abide ill-conceived criticism when the critic doesn't understand the source material.

"IMDBers made me waste my money". Rubbish, Caveat Emptor very much applies here.

reply

LOL Shrooms....that movie was terrible.

Yes, I've heard the ending is pretty cliche... and perhaps if this was 1985 this kinda ending would fly.... but you'd think the master of horror would wanna change it up. Well...mostly I care about how Carpenter creates atmosphere, so if he does that successfully...then I might be somewhat pleased with this film. He's one of the few horror directors that really knows how to create a strange tension without doing much....at least he used to...

Can't fault 'em for wanting that, and going with the hot girl cram as a means to pull it off. Why is it so many people decry a lack of "realism" only when it comes to improbably hot babes? Relax, enjoy.

reply

Don't blame it on others when you don't know what it means if there are only 200 votes for a movie and all of them good.

reply

as long as it doesn't end with lines as cheesy as those which ended 'Ghosts of Mars', I can probably live with it. I'm a big Carpenter fan-- I thought "Cigarette Burns" was really one of the best things he's even done, and he often does better with small budgets and time constraints than if he can just do whatever he wants at his leisure.
but if it ends with something like "Time to kick more ass?" "It's what we do best"-- barf-inducingly awful, flat-out ruined the end of "Ghosts of Mars", which otherwise was pretty good. Better than that piece-of-crap "Vampires" anyway, I hated that. One good scene, and a lot of macho bs otherwise, even for a Carpenter film it was overindulgent. Even James Woods couldn't save it.

reply

Agree. Just watched about 2-3 Carpenter-movies. (Actually not a big horror-fan, or not big budget-horrorfilms like Hostel and that *beep* Never liked these Carpenter-movies. But Cigarette Burns is the only horror-"movie" I can watch again and again and again.

reply

So can I ask where or how all of you saw it? Was it a special screening or something since it's not released yet? Just curious because I really want to see it regardless of anyone's opinion lol

reply

@tony-vaughan47 - I did watch the film yeah. Yes I did understand it. It was poor.

@alesisqs61 - lol Shrooms was all I could think of at the time. Knew I'd seen it in more films. Just saw an advert for Shutter Island, which also has the same ending, and it reminded me of this, so I came to check if anyone wrote back.

@starcassi - The film was in the cinema about a month or so ago.

gerrard2 - I love horror films. Love thrillers. Didn't love this. Can't a guy enjoy stuff from his childhood? :p

reply

You obviously didn't understand the film, as it was nothing like Shrooms. In Shrooms it turned out that she was high the whole time and killed all of her friends and in The Ward the girl had split personalities so no-one actually died in this film. Two different endings.

I have to admit I looked at the IMDB score too, however I figured a John Carpenter horror movie set in a mental institution would be a lock anyway. Boy was I wrong.

There was none of the typical Carpenter atmosphere to this one. Frankly it was pretty boring and relied far too heavily on shameless jump "scares". Send that *beep* back to the Scream franchise already. They didn't even try to be unpredictable about it.

The ward being filled with hot girls made it hard to take the plot seriously early on, but then when you figure out that the plot is *beep* you come to appreciate having something to look at, because there isn't much else to pay attention to. I got so bored with the plot that I was hoping for a little nudity, but that was a disappointment too. Yeah I could just go watch a porno, but nudity is synonymous with *beep* horror films, and unfortunately this movie falls into that category.

I'd give it an average score at best; A base of 5/10, with a +1 for hot women, -1 for the nudity tease and -1 for going overboard with jump scares.

End result: 4/10

I'm so fed up of twists. Twists are so common now, and so unoriginal that they never surprise me any more. Throughout the movie I was just waiting for them to unleash the stupid twist on us, to the point it ruined the movie. What is wrong with having a well written, well acted movie that keeps you gripped because of the story they're trying to tell, instead of throwing twists left right and centre which ultimately just annoy you.

This would have been a much better movie if they had kept it simple.

Under no criteria can any of these girls be considered "hot", especially Kristen whose teeth were a major turn-off. I guess you guys don't get out much.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

I totally agree. This movie is God-awful. I like Carpenter ... but this was a pile of cr*p. The 'acting' seriously made me cringe.

reply

I can't believe Carpenter is involved in such a sh!tty piece of crap...

Why on earth has he been gone for this long without doing anything but the Masters of Horror episodes and then come back to direct this awful thing? I'll try to excuse him with the thought of the script being written by someone close to him or else I don't understand why he would possibly want to direct such a predictable and cliché story.

The acting was bad also, Heard and Harris (the doc) were a little better, but the rest of the cast is just plain awful to watch.. the girl with the plush with her fake scared face throughout the movie.. common..she was sooooo bad.

I'm trying hard to find something positive to say about this, but thats really impossible. *EDIT The generic music was good, that's all I can think of * Carpenter should stay hidden with shame for another 10 years after this!

Very disappointed, I love Carpenter usually and couldn't wait to see his new project, but this failed.
