When Lars Ulrich came on screen...

...the whole cinema seemed to groan. Anyone know why? Is he renowned for being a bit of a gasbag gobsh*te or something?

reply

Mostly Napster backlash. Even though that was years ago and everyone else seems to have moved on from that.

But it didn't help that he STILL seemed like a pompous windbag in the film.

Gave me douche chills.

reply

Dunno. Could it be that Metallica are viewed as a more commercial band than Maiden? Or is it that people just felt it was an obvious ploy to have a famous rocker give Maiden the official thumbs up?

reply

Same thing happened at the showing I was at...some booing too. I think aside from the Napster thing he's kind of generally regarded as being a whiny ass.

He actually got a round of applause where I saw it. Why would people react negatively while he's paying huge respect to Maiden?

reply

because hes a bitch and metallica suck...

they suppposely praised iron maiden by doing a cover of remember tomorrow (reli badly) but then in a vid on youtube they mock maiden by ripping the arse out of it and doing it badly on purpose and the crowd laughs/cheers the mockery... typical metallica - rubbishing something/someone thats better than them (dave mustanine, napster, iron maiden)

They've done intentionally *beep* versions of Prowler and Run to the Hills live, just for laughs.

I doubt they were intentionally disrespecting Iron Maiden, although James said in an interview that Bruce was the most arrogant person he'd ever met.

Come to think of it, there is a pisstake version of the Run to the Hills intro on Garage Inc. that follows the covers of One Last Caress/Green Hell.

reply

a lot of bands do comic version of certain songs...i've heard maiden cover 'stairway' in a very funny way...it didnt look like they were ridiculing Led Zep. why judge so artists on how '****ed up' they are as long a their music is good.and the whole napster thing was fine imo, i've read mustaine complaint about it too...there's no comparison between maiden and metallica.they're completely different bands from completely different backgrounds and well, maiden is maiden...

reply

Mustaine complained about Napster. Ulrich complained and then filmed a lawsuit against Napster.....and several Metallica fans. You know, people that had been paying to see his pansy ass play at concerts and the like.

reply

"Although James said in an interview that Bruce was the most arrogant person he`d ever met".

Really? Any link to that? To me at least Dickinson doesn`t come across as particularly arrogant at all... certainly not as self absorbed as Hetfield, anyway. Even though his often hyperactive behaviour can get somewhat annoying.

Also this guy despises their fans, just lately he came out saying how in the 80s his fans asked from him to "do" their girlfriends.
and called them maladjusted and deviants, and generally looked down upon them.

He forgets he is who he is because of his fans, Dickinson knows this, and thats why he gets such a following.

in the end the Japanese guy summed it up better in the movie.

Each day Maiden proves more genuine, many of us in our 30s or early 20s, don't wish to be despised by our favorite artists.

only a few old-schoolers, understand this, and they have all gotten decent comebacks.

from the tip of my tongue I can think of Halford, Dio and Dickinson.

everyone of them knows without their fans they would be just senior citizens remembering glories past.

Those people are maladjusted deviants.

I'm not entirely sure what a gasbag gobsh*te even is but it sounds right on. If Lars would close his mouth and just DRUM, the world would ne a better place. (well, that is, if Metallica once again made music that I wanted to listen to)

...have you ever seen a human heart? It looks like a fist covered in blood.

reply

I was surprised he didn't think Iron Maiden sounded "stock" to his ears!

reply

Forget Lars, God was on screen a few short seconds, RONNIE JAMES DIO. Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE Maiden fan, but where would we be without RJD. Iron Maiden didn't receive their Godhood until 1982, Dio got it around 76 with Rainbow's Rising Album.

reply

Nothing to do with Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, a film that is actually more ridiculous than Spinal Tap and unintentionally one of the funniest films ever.

Lars did come across as a complete cock in this

reply

god damn it is every one idiots on this lars is a great drummer and every1 is still pissed for the whole napser thing when the guy who runs napster was actually in the wrong so shut up u morans .

reply

I think you mean MORONS. Nice try, though.

...have you ever seen a human heart? It looks like a fist covered in blood.

reply

Probably because Lars is an okay drummer at best. I'll admit that on the recent world Magnetic tour, his drums had amazing sound...however when it came to pulling off some of the classic Metallica songs, he just didn't have it in him anymore. Blackened for example, one of my favorite Metallica songs ever but Lars's drumming just wasn't as good as it used to be. He compenstates for his sluggishness with overly loud and thunderous drumming. Heck, Machine Head's drummer absolutely destroyed the arena better than Lars did!

1) Napster backlash as stated before
2) Hypocrite, as he offers digital downloads now too.
3) Made himself look like a total douchebag in Some Kind of Monster.
4) Legally owns the name 'Metallica'. How metal indeed.
5) Is mostly responsible for the complete re-imaging of the band (read; the new logo, musical style and haircuts during the 'Load' and 'Reload' abominations.)

Metallica died when they released the Black Album and tried a resurrection with Death Magnetic. Anyway you look at it, it has become Corporate Metal. Heavy Metal Metallica is already long gone and buried.

Nothing against Jason but the real Metallica died with Cliff. They were just never the same after that.

Ulrich is regarded as being a little bitch. I say this a big Metallica fan.

I just watched this at home, and that was my reaction. That little weenie walked into their dressing room like some 15 year old trying to sneak backstage at a Britney Spears show, what a little scrub. See the problem is that you have people like Iron Maiden who have pride, integrity, and have always played for the fans, kept things at a fair price, don't give a crap if you download their music (see Bruce Dickinson "Death on the Road") because they make their dough in front of the fans putting on shows. Then you have Metallica and Lars, who are a bunch of whiney little scrubs who have not put out a decent album since 1989. That is why there is a negative reaction, Lars was trying to tap some creativity and integrity away from Iron Maiden.

reply

I am so sick of all the Lars haters.

People ... as far as Napster ... Lars was right! Just let it go. Lars was 100% in the right. It's sad that you guys have to try harder to steal from him and other bands by not buying their albums ... but he was right. Lars went to bat for all the bands who couldn't defend themselves. He used his platform of superstardom (sp) to help and stop people from taking music.
Second, shut up about the black album. So what if it was a commercial success? That dosent make it a bad album. Every song on it is amazing and Bob Rock was the best thing to happen to Metallica (until St Anger ... lol). Without Bob, we'd prolly still not even hear bass. I hate these people that hate a band once they get famous. "Oh I liked them when they were not as famous and not as good of songwriters" ... don't you want your favorite bands to succeed and make it? I know I do.
This movie was amazing ... I liked it way better than Metallica's movie. But I must admit ... I dug Lars in the films (and the man RJD). It's awesome to see bands that we all know and love pay tribute to these metal gods. I just wish all the Lars hatred would stop. He's still a good drummer ... Death Magnetic was awesome ... Lars offers "official approved downloads" ... not bootleggs and low quality versions ... and I am sure Iron Maiden likes Metallica. People just need to let things go ... Napster ... Lars was right. Yes he has an ego ... but what band dosen't. I am sure even one guy in Maiden has one ... they just keep it in check better.

Sorry to ramble, but all this *beep* on Lars (basically because he wnt let u steal music from him) is rediculous. Yes they have money ... but if your neighbor was rich ... would that give you the right to walk into his house and steal his TV? No. Stop being jealous cuz people make money and just enjoy their music. I loved this film ... I love Maiden ... love Metallica ... would love to see them tour together.

I wasn't crapping on cliff. I was referring to "Justice" w/ Newstead. That's what I ment about no bass. I think Cliff is and was the best bassist Metallica ever had. Could you imagine the black album with him? Dang ... awesome.
Lars ... he is a turd ... I admit it. But the Napster thing wasn't wrong. A person isn't a dick cuz they don't want you stealing from him. Just cuz yer friend is rich don't mean you can steal his TV just cuz he can afford more ... you know?
I agree James pushing Jason away was awful and I miss him greatly. I love Metallica too and admit Lars is a douche ... but he isn't a douche cuz of Napster ... he's a douche cuz he has an ego the size of Texas and semeed to be the only person who didn't grow fro the whole Some Kind Of Monster thing. But ... he shouldn't be crapped on for loving Maiden ... we all do. You know? And Napster ... they should just let it go. Shawn Fanning got busted ... oh well. Now we have LimeWire and such ... lol.

Long live Maiden and Metallica. Two of Metal's greatest bands.

reply

No. The Black Album and everything since is the wrong Metallica.
They are not a good band anymore.
Lars was always a wanker (see ALL footage for proof).
James caught being a wanker off Lars.
Jason is ok.
Cliff shouldn't have swapped beds.

My biggest beef with Lars was when he turned his back on metal. He publicly declared, "Metal is Dead". After that, screw him.

reply

I'd put Adrian Smith AND Dave Murray ahead of Kirk Hammett. I'm not saying Hammett is not a good guitarist, I'm just saying that Rolling Stone has their favorites. I'd love to see this list and see what mediocre guitarists beat out Smith and Murray.
