Coffee plothole

So he can only get a dull breakfast and plain black coffee from the cafeteria...

But enjoys ample credit in the bar and restaurants?

I think it was like free breakfast bars vs. being able to freely purchase food/drinks at a bar or restaurant.
Breakfast he has no choice in, as it's just a free amenity- but he can spend as much as he wants in 'future credit' at the other places- which are most likely only open at certain times.

Didn't he use Aurora's ID to gain access to the fancy restaurant?

He was using it BEFORE she woke up, along with the dance machine.

We should wait for the DVD, so people can check their memory before posting OR they can make a list of items for review, and watch it again in the theatre to check them.

reply

Yea he definately was using the resterant before he woke her. In a scene he is speaking Spanish (I think) to the robot serving him.

reply

I saw it twice by the way.

The passengers have a choice to either eat the cafeteria food or go into further debt to the company by eating at the restaurants. Doesn't matter since he was gonna die on the ship anyways. He didn't have to hack the cafeteria because he could get better coffee from Arthur "on credit". I Think he was just making a show for Aurora and then later show her the restaurants. The question I have is if they're eating at the restaurants on Gus' dime, will there be any left for the other passengers when they arrive? If I were them, I woulda moved into Andy Garcia's mansion because they owe it to them for saving the ship and the captain can eat whatevers left over.

Cruise ships usually offer free food to passengers. But make you pay for drinks and fancy meals. Since his coffee and breakfast were free, they were more limited than his booze which he was no doubt paying for.

So he's allowed to buy fancy dinner on credit but for breakfast he has no option at all to "upgrade" to fancy breakfast on credit? Why not?

In any hotel or on any cruise ship you will pretty much always have the option to "upgrade" by paying additional money because these are businesses who just love making money. "You didn't book breakfast for your stay? No problem, we just gonna put it on the bill for your room."

If this already works in our 21st century, then I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work on some super advanced fancy space-ship where guests are made up of different pricing tiers.

Fancy food being limited can't be the explanation because then access to the fancy dinner restaurants would also have been limited, regardless of Jim wanting to put it on his bill.

reply

You are no doubt correct on all points. I'm just telling you what cruise ships are like. When you board a cruise ship all of the food is free except in the fancy dining areas. And booze is the only thing that isn't free. If you go to the buffet and you don't like what's being served there, they don't have an upgrade option. Your only option is to go to the fancy dining area.

reply

I would assume that the amount of breakfast items in the storage is limited and therefor upgrading your breakfast is not an option. Or if they have a lot of surplus materials for possible upgrades, then the upgrade should be done by the crew and not by the whim of the passenger, since the crew has to check if there is enough for everyone if you upgrade.

The restaurants on the other hand use variety of produce and meat, which can be used to prepare all the food necessary and the produce not used on the trip will be stored in the colony for further use.

This really bothered me as well. What also bothered me is that a ship with this level of technology even HAS such a shit breakfast option for the lowest price level in the first place. I mean come on. Is money REALLY that tight? Talk about corporate greed!

reply

i think the breakfast was prepaid, included in the trip.....the restaurant visits were charged to his account/credit card

reply

There were two types of cards I believe, both pre-paid. But she had like a Gold membership and his was lesser than that. I thought it was funny that they showed that, even on a space mission, cost cutting reigns supreme.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/LE_aVVuNqnE
