I think the breakfast was more like an amenity for him staying on the ship. Like when you stay at a hotel and the breakfast is free. Only he wasn't like a golden passenger or whatever it was called. I don't think he technically paid for his food or drinks at the bar/restaurants, or if he did, he was in a lot of debt lol

It's not a contradiction. You can't just assume that since he has a lower breakfast plan that he also can't drink much at the bar. The breakfast plan may have been paid for ahead of time, while other expenses may be charged later.
shareThe even bigger problem was the huge UI design flaw where all buttons showed cups without any text or variation and only when you press on one, it tells you what it would've been would you have been Gold member.
It's like having to blindly push the buttons and dispose everything that comes out of the machine until you finally find the button with the drink you wanted.
How did the coffee machine know before / when Jim pressed the button, that he was not a Gold Class passenger ? Some kind of scan probably.
That means it knows he is only allowed the black coffee, so there is no need to show him what the other icons mean.
I agree it might have been better to grey them out and only show his option. Perhaps it is deliberately done that way, for the benefit of the Gold Class passengers, so they can gloat over what the "cattle class" customers can't have. Maybe it was another part of the cascading failure.
The principle of exclusivity, means that some people must be excluded.
even worse this talented mechanic can hack the unbreakable sleep pods - which broke - but he can't hack himself a macchiato? this would have been such an easy way to show that he IS such a handy mechanic, and they missed that opportunity.

It was necessary so that they could later show us the scene where Aurora offers him whatever he likes from the Gold Membership menu. It establishes his character as a decent person who usually follows the rules and who doesn't take what's not his, unless it's absolutely necessary.

If that was part of the motivation for everything then I would say they shot themselves in the foot pretty bad when very soon after her giving him a gold star breakfast, it has him tell the audience that he "shoplifted" the suit that he's wearing...

It happening so soon after her giving him breakfast would be VERY sloppy filmmaking if the intent of that scene was to have the effect you suggest on the audience... especially with as much buildup that the movie would be giving it.
