Major Plot Hole!

Right so.. theres only one pod, but they can both most definitely fit in it.
Why not get the robot bar tender to use the captains id to put them both into hibernation?
I thought of it straight away.. anyone else??

This has puzzled me as well.

Jim keeps saying: There are spare parts for everything.

So there are probably two scenarios from here:
1. There would be a spare auto doc somewhere on the ship.
2. There are spare parts to build an extra auto doc.

There's a problem with that. They explained that hibernation pods were proprietary technology. We can assume that the autodoc was copyright protected as well and Jim might not have been able to build a new one or set up a potential spare unit.

But there was another solution. they could've taken turns in the autodoc. We know they had 88 more years until reached their destination. So, if each of them would've used the autodoc for 4 years at a time (one sleeps and the other one stays awake), they only would've aged 22 years and still have plenty of time to make a life for themselves on the planet.

reply

And spend 4 years alternately alone staring at their loved one? Sounds like hell to me

reply

The copyright issue seems a flimsy excuse to contrive a plot complication. Why would they send out 5,000+ people 100 half light years away with NO way to repair the sleeping pods. It was SO easy for Jim to hack the pod to wake someone up AND for a mechanic and writer to do rocket technology repairs on the ENTIRE space ship--everything except the sleeping pods!

I really wish people like you would pay attention to the movie. Fixing the pods was not difficult. The difficulty was that the pods only hold people who have been put into suspended animation, they do not put people into suspended animation themselves. This was explained very clearly in the movie.

reply

The bigger point is, there should be a way to put multiple people (i.e., themselves) into hibernation.

In fact, there is the medical pod where you just push a button and put yourself to sleep. What's so hard about installing several extra med pods on the whole ship, which you'll need anyway for 5,200 people when they wake up.

NOTHING was explained very clearly and/or plausibly in the movie.

There is. It just isn't accessible to passengers on the ship.

That's a different process from the one used by the pods. That is made clear in the movie.

We have no idea how the medical pod works, so we have no idea why that decision was made. But why would healthy people in a benign environment need all these intensive medical procedures?

So a solution would be to wake up someone from the crew, have that person put them back in their pods, then the crew member use the autodoc.

What leads you to believe that any of the crew know how to do it? What leads you to believe that the facilities to do it exist on the ship?

reply

Because the guy said its not accessible to passengers on the ship made me think they said the crew could but thinking back they never said that did they? My mistake.

reply

They would each age 44 years, not 22.

So if their character's ages match their real life ages she would be 70 and he'd be 81 by the time they reached the planet.

When the sun comes up you better be running!

I didn't think of using the bartender, but I did wonder why they couldn't get in together - another Jack and Rose moment.

If life gives you MELONS, then you probably have DYSLEXIA.

reply

Just because they can fit, doesn't mean it will work.

When in operation, you can clearly see that there isn't enough room for the pod to function with two people in it.

reply

I agree with what the others have said about 1 pod not being able to sustain 2 people but given that we accept the fact that the ship has just 1 auto pod (even if we think that's stupid) I think they have 2 options they don't appear to have considered.. sharing the time in the pod so 40 years each (although they would both be old when they come round and would have to spend 40 years alone), or she takes the majority of the time and then swaps over for 10 years or so, so that he can experience the new planet, even if he is really old when he gets there.

reply

I think they were definitely raising the possibility of having a sequel slyly.

reply

There's a plot hole in your post.

Obviously the pod is designed for a single person. The computer would say "no" when detecting two people inside. Idiot.
