Alex Proyas keeps banging on about how this remake is a slap in the face to Brandon Lee's legacy. Frankly, I think he's overreacting. We fans all know what's what and no matter how good or bad any Crow sequels or remakes are, we'll always have Brandon's portrayal of Eric in our souls.
But this idea? This CGI Brandon idea? This is a terrible idea and absolutely is peeing all over the original, the story, the comic, and Lee.
First: CG actors suck. You've rightly pointed out that CGIushing in Rogue One was sad. So was Computer Doll Princess Leia at the end there. I thought Scorcese managed it in The Irishman and I was okay with Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy, but those are notably de-aging tech, not outright actor recreation. Even if the uncanny valley were not populated by such creations, at the very least I consider it an ethically dodgy grey area to do this to actors who can't sign off on these projects - not to mention the fact that it encourages studios to use CG and AI tech to replicate long-gone "public domain" actors rather than giving somebody - a new or up-coming actor - a job.
Bringing Brandon back as a CGI monster in a new adventure would tarnish his legacy. It would feel sad, cheap, and like they were being either cynical (for the cash grab) or overly sentimental (light a candle for Brandon!) or some paradoxical vomit of both.
Then there's the story. Eric and Shelly's story begins and ends. It starts with their falling in love and having a horrible tragedy annihilate both of them. It ends when Eric's spirit puts to an end all of those responsible for this evil deed. Proyas put a wonderful emphasis on Eric righting other wrongs, too. He influences the lives of Darla and Sarah and Albright while he is hunting the evil in the city. But that story is self-contained. The point of it, the satisfaction we get out of the ending, comes from Eric finishing his life/un-life's work and coming to rest with Shelly at long last. It's cathartic. If he comes back again, it cheapens the earned ending of the original comic/film. It would be like the character/plot resets that The Force Awakens did to characters like Han Solo.
In short: that's a no from me on CGI Brandon Lee.
