Oh man, the rating...

I was going to see this too... 6.2 does not look good. Anyone else say differently? I hear it's just copycat of the very first Excorsit or that it's a Nun + Rite mashup or there is all the generic tropes in it rehashed. Evil Dead Rise on the other hand has a 8.2.

The critical drinker just interviewed Crowe and I must say, I wasn’t planning on watching this, but I certainly am now. It’s getting as decent reviews for an Exorcist type film as one would expect and even the so so ones are singing Crowe’s praises. I actually think it’s going to be an unexpectedly pleasant little film.
And the fact that it has an R rating is positively telling as well. They’re going the distance with this and not looking to milk a universal audience.

reply

WTF? How'd he manage that? Surprised he managed to snag a celeb. Has he ever done any other?

reply

He previously interviewed a Matthew Marsden (Rambo, Blackhawk Down). Obviously he's not a huge celebrity like Russell Crowe, but it was a start.

reply

He’s on the up and up, and old schools like Crowe probably appreciate a low key interview stage where the interviewer is genuinely interested in talking about the film and isn’t going to spend half the interview kissing his ass (see Jimmy Fallon).

reply

It was ok but a bit sensationalized

Don't worry about IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes or whatever else. If you are interested in seeing it, go see it. Ant-Man 3 got destroyed, but I still saw it and liked it. Not my favorite MCU/Marvel/superhero movie, but I still liked it overall. Plus I disagree with IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes all the time. And it's gone both ways. I disagreed with a high percentage/star rating, or disagreed with a low percentage/star rating. And I don't trust early reviews and stuff since they are praising it and stuff because they got to see it early. So giving it 9's and 10's is because they are on some post-movie high, or maybe it's their first horror movie ever or they don't watch horror that much and are easily impressed and stuff. Kind of like M3GAN. I've actually seen/read people say that M3GAN is the first of its kind and there is no movie like it, but Child's Play/Chucky existed before M3GAN, and M3GAN is pretty much a crappy remake of the Child's Play remake. Plus there is a movie called Dolly Dearest. That did a female killer doll as well and first. By like 30 years. I disagree with the new Evil Dead. I don't get why people are loving it except for all possibilities I just mentioned. From watching the trailers to the new Evil Dead, it doesn't scream Evil Dead to me. Just looks like any other horror movie of the last 5-10 years. Until the title popped up, I thought I was watching a trailer to the next The Conjuring (main movies or spinoffs), or another Insidious movie, or just any haunted house movie. And everything I've seen from just the trailers, I've seen all that stuff in other horror movies. Just like The Conjuring and Insidious. To me, the new Evil Dead just seems like they made a random haunted house/possession movie and slapped "Evil Dead" on it. So yeah. Don't bother with IMDB or RT if you are already interested in the movie.

You serious? 6+ is a pretty good rating for a horror flick and the fact that this has Russell Crowe as the lead is enough for me to watch it.

I just scanned the reviews in IMDb and they all seem positive. There are only a handful of horrors that get a 7-8+ rating.

reply

My sentiments as well, any horror film that garners a 6+ IMDB or a 59% or higher on RT is most likely a decent horror film, worthy of a watch at the very least.
And there are numerous reviews claiming that Crowe brought his B/B+ game, not phoning it in so to speak.
The R rating is telling as well, if it had been given a PG13 I wouldn’t give it the time of day, R rating shows quite a bit of spine from the studio and that they believe in the script.
I blew this film off at first but my interest in it is steadily growing, and I’m now looking forward to watching.

reply

Yes, the R rating definitely has my approval as well. Fingers crossed it's not a let-down.

reply

Let me know how it goes. I'm still on the fence about it.

Have you seen this yet, Rorikon?

I just watched it earlier today - thought it was decent. An average exorcism / supernatural possession flick with all the cliches that was 300% better because of Crowe. He was as good as ever in this and made it work. The plot didn't slow down at any time and the supporting cast did a good job as well. I did find the possessed boy's facial expressions hilarious at times when he was trying to mean mug and be scary, but overall thought it was one of the better horrors to come out lately.

7/10 for me. Do watch it if you haven't and like horrors - you won't be bored.

reply

Personally, 6-7 is entertaining. Anything below a 6 is usually a yikes, to me at least

reply

Well Allaby gave it a 9, if that helps.

A movie that casts organized religion in a favorable manner. The reviewers here are as good as you’ll get from the woke critics

reply

I agree. It should be a 4.5 at best.

I've watched two horror films this week, one of them being The Pope's Exorcist of course and a lesser known flick called, Look Away.

I would have to say, TPE is the better of the two. However, LA might be one of the worst films I've seen this year. I mainly watched it for India Eisley's nude scene and honestly, that was the best part of the movie. lol...

While TPE is not exactly a "great" film it was pretty interesting. I kinda liked it but it's a very fantastical take on a possession film. I guess they all are to some degree, but this one went overboard. Although, as I stated, parts of it are interesting and who knows, maybe scary..lol.. either way, it's worthy of a look if you just like Russell Crowe.

I think the current rating of 6.1 is about right but I'll give it a slightly higher rating and go 6.5 out of 10. Pretty good stuff...
