Utter *beep*

What the *beep* was the deal with this movie. How this even got greenlit is totally beyond me. Reasons it was *beep* ..

1)No way the car would be THAT far down off the road. Especially given the trees.

2)I can buy that the dog was his dog and acted as a guardian angel of sorts but what the *beep* was the deal with the woman. I mean she wasn't even in the car and he kills her.. yes she's an illusion but why kill her. Lame ass way of making us think he robbed the bank.. lazy writer.

3)The black guy taking the money made us think what was going on.. yet again an illusion.. but why, he wasn't a part of the robbery.. another piece of lazy writing with no point to it other than make us think.. very cheap!

4)When he crawls off he goes downhill.. WTF!! A car crash isn't going to take a car uphill.. JESUS CHRIST! There's suspension of disbelief but that's taking the piss. The road is obviously above him.

5)After he crawl's AWAY from the car he somehow ends up back at it, even after he goes in the river. Come on seriously!?

6)The direction was *beep* too.. no suspense at all.. we knew he was going to get in an altercation with the lion but no build to it. Add to that the soundtrack didn't add to the movie at all.

7) Probably the biggest reason it's *beep* is we don't feel for the character at all because.. we think he's a robber.. then we find out he's not. THAT'S IT besides the fact that he had a dog when he was younger and he may or may not have a girlfriend/wife... BORING!!!

No guile or craft from the film at all. The only plus points are the acting of both the dog and Brody.

Yeah this kind of annoyed me too. I mean he crawled all over the place, through a river, only to end up right back where he was? I don't buy that.

I had no problem with the rest of the film except for the ending. I felt it was too abrupt and they didn't show him calling the park ranger. He just suddenly appears it's like what? I thought maybe the dvd skipped a scene. Plus just for once I'd like to see someone being rescued and the AFTERMATH. I've seen so many of these types movies (Cast Away, 127 Hours, Alive) where we are with the hero during all his struggles, he gets rescued and then THE END. I hate that! Show us what happens when he gets to the hospital or the police station. When he reunites with the woman. Anything!

When he ended up in the same place, I thought that the film was a pure psychological film and that he was in hell the whole time.

Le temps détruit tout.

reply

I thought this because the film felt FAR too shallow. Certainly not enough to make a feature length out of.

reply

I can see why. There were a lot of shots that felt repetitive.

That's funny, because most of the time I was watching it, I thought I was the one in hell and it was part of Nietzsche's eternal return.

reply

Cast Away totally showed the aftermath. The space in the name itself almost alludes to that fact. Although he was a castaway on the island, when he returned, he has been cast away by his former relationships and life.

Oh dear, another letter from someone who cannot watch anything more adult than Winnie-the-Pooh.

I'm just writing to clear up a few of the points you made...

1)No way the car would be THAT far down off the road. Especially given the trees.

the road was way up a steep hill and you see at the end that the robbers were driving fast and Brody grabbed the wheel; it is plausible that the car would have landed there

They had an argument before he was kidnapped; I took it to be he felt guilt for his 'last words' to her combined with the fact I also believe he sub-consciously is feeling guilt and post traumatic stress for the fact that he also killed robbers. Even though he was just trying to survive taking a life would be a huge deal for most people

3)The black guy taking the money made us think what was going on.. yet again an illusion.. but why, he wasn't a part of the robbery.. another piece of lazy writing with no point to it other than make us think.. very cheap!

The black hunter isn't an illusion; just an opportunist. Brody did pull a gun on him, the hunter probably thought he was one of the robbers but instead of killing him, just left him

4)When he crawls off he goes downhill.. WTF!! A car crash isn't going to take a car uphill.. JESUS CHRIST! There's suspension of disbelief but that's taking the piss. The road is obviously above him.

he crawls downhill following the hunter who went in that direction, probably thinking it must lead him somewhere...it needs to be remembered that he spent three nights in the car before escaping, he was badly wounded with little water and no food, he wouldn't be thinking clearly

5)After he crawl's AWAY from the car he somehow ends up back at it, even after he goes in the river. Come on seriously!?

This may well be an hallucination. With his injuries he probably wouldn't be able to crawl such a distance; with all the rain he may have just felt he was in a river...this is just left up to the viewer I think

6)The direction was *beep* too.. no suspense at all.. we knew he was going to get in an altercation with the lion but no build to it. Add to that the soundtrack didn't add to the movie at all.

I never thought he would get into an 'altercation' with the mountain lion although I did think the movie would play it up more. I grew up in woods similar to this. A predator will take the easiest food available rather than go at an alive person, they have learned quickly to avoid man. However, had there not been dead people around then it would have gone for Brody sensing his injury

7) Probably the biggest reason it's *beep* is we don't feel for the character at all because.. we think he's a robber.. then we find out he's not. THAT'S IT besides the fact that he had a dog when he was younger and he may or may not have a girlfriend/wife... BORING!!!

I felt for him, the isolation and frustration, his hunger and his tenacity for survival.

This movie was great, and it makes sense if you paid attention. If it's too slow for you WATCH AN ACTION MOVIE. I'm sick of people like you criticizing movies of a genre you obviously don't even care for.

reply

This movie is different. Yes, it's confusing at times and things may not make sense. This is why that in this particular situation you must pay attention to it instead of talking/texting, going to the bathroom without hitting 'pause', etc.

I do agree that it was a bit slow and a slow burn altogether. The ending however, did clear things up and did put a nice little twist on the situation, enough to compensate for everything else.

"Supercharge this."

About Brody & the dog. I took a screenwriting course several years ago, & the screenwriter teaching it said if u want to establish that a character at heart isn't all that bad, you'll see a "pet the dog" scene.

He didn't mean it literally, but that has always stuck in my head, & there are a lot of movies where the good guy.....or bad guy that will arc into good guy....pets the dog or at least doesn't do to it what he just did to a couple of people.

Where is Kathy Bates when you need her.

What you put in your Subject Line: The Roadrunner would 2nd that.

That is pretty interesting, deck007.
